Val d’Orcia – 1 day
Pienza
With its charming villages, castles and internationally famous squares, Italy is a super romantic little town. It is no wonder that so many couples choose it as a destination for their honeymoon, to celebrate their wedding anniversary or even to immortalize the moment of “accepted”.
During spring, it is a delight to walk among the stone houses in the historic center of Pienza and enjoy the flowers in the windows, life that seems to have stopped time. And there, in one of these little streets, there is a special one, Via dell’Amore, which as the name suggests is the street of Love.
Then take the opportunity to visit the little shops, especially those that sell cheese. Pienza is famous for its pecorino cheese, which as the name implies is made from goat’s milk (pecora in Italian). Enter a store where you intend to buy something and do a real cheese tasting.
Montalcino
Known not just for being a charming medieval town, but for its countryside, Montalcino prides itself on producing one of the finest wines in the world, Brunello di Montalcino. The city itself is surrounded by walls and one of its great attractions is its fortress, built in the 14th century. On a tour of the village, you can also visit the Church of Santo Agostinho and take the time to visit the nearby wineries, many of which offer guided tours and wine tasting.
Abadia di San’Antimo – The current building of the Benedictine abbey dates from the beginning of the 12th century, but there are stories that say that the place has existed since the 9th century. A visit to the place allows you to see the interior of the abbey, its crypt, vegetable garden and pharmacy, which sells herbal products. Video guides are available for those who want more information about the building and its history.
Montepulciano
This little town is very close to Montalcino. Montepulciano is the land of Nobile wine, which brought fame to the city. It is located on top of a hill and is one of the highest villages in Tuscany.
The main attractions of the city are Il Corso, the main street, the Duomo, the Chiesa de Sant’Agostino, the Piazza Grande (which was the scene of the second film in the Twilight series: New Moon), the Palazzo Comunale.
Bagno Vignoni
Because it is so small, many people end up not visiting Bagno Vignoni, a village on top of a hill that, instead of a “square”, has a thermal water source in its center. The village is really tiny and is part of San Quirico D’Orcia, 4 km away. The place is of Etruscan origin and gained fame for its thermal waters with medicinal properties, which ended up being visited by pilgrims who passed nearby.
It is a very peaceful place, with few restaurants and hotels and a wonderful view of this area of Tuscany. In addition, it is a very interesting place because the thermal water source located in the “square” of the village, Piazza delle Sorgenti, flows downhill and turns into a park, called Parco dei Mollini, where four windmills were carved into the rocks. and which were mainly used to grind cereals in the old days. A peculiarity of this park of mills is that it worked even in summer due to the constant flow of water, when other mills were closed.
