Sorrento Tours

You are about to embark on the journey you have always wanted: a tour of the Sorrento coast. And, of course, you’re planning to spend a day in Sorrento.

You are wondering what there is to see in a day? In the few hours you have available, there are 11 attractions that you must not miss.

Piazza Tasso is named in honor of the Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso, of whom the inhabitants are extremely proud. The square is really the heart of the city of Sorrento.

Filled with bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, the square is excellent for relaxing, chatting, having lunch or having a coffee and enjoying the movement of the city.

In addition, in the immediate vicinity of the square, you will find historic buildings that are well worth a visit – such as the Baroque church of Santa Maria del Carmine (in Baroque style, built in the 16th century) and the Palazzo Correale (built in the 14th century, with a Gothic facade Catalan) – and also the sculpture by Torquato Tasso, the poet in whose honor the square was named.

Enjoy and also visit the Valley of the Mills (Il Vallone dei Mulini), which is behind Piazza Tasso: they are secular ruins covered by vegetation. The view is beautiful! It’s worth a trip there!

Corso Italia

Sorrento Tours

At the end of Via della Pietà, you’ll find yourself in front of Sorrento’s Cathedral, a Baroque-style building where an antique Nativity scene from the 1700’s is on permanent display. Continue your walk down Corso Italia, lined with fashionable shops and boutiques.

Along the way, you’ll pass Villa Fiorentino, headquarters of the Sorrento Foundation where exhibitions are often held. Over the past few years, shows of works by Dalì, Picasso, and the Italian sculptor Pomodoro have been held here.

Via San Cesareo

Sorrento Tours

One of the most fascinating streets in Sorrento is Via San Cesareo, which is right in the centre just off Piazza Tasso.
Running parallel with the much wider Corso Italia, the street follows one of the lines of the ancient Greek and Roman town plan.

It is narrow because it was designed to be shaded by the buildings along both sides to keep it as cool as possible during the height of the summer.

Museum Correale

For over a century, this villa houses a museum which houses precious greek and roman artefacts, pottery, ceramics, paintings by great artists (such as Peter Paul Rubens, Abel Grimmer, by Giovan Battista) and works by Torquato Tasso (who born in Sorrento the march 11, 1544).

The last descendants of the Correale family, Alfredo and Pompeo, counts of Terranova, gave the villa with its gardens and panoramic terrace to the people of Sorrento, providing the perfect showcase for this magnificent collection.
The Correale Museum is open every day except Tuesday from 9.30 to 1.30 pm at Via Correale 48

Museo Bottega della Tarsia Lignea

Sorrento Tours

Since the 18th century, Sorrento has been famous for its intarsio furniture, made with elaborately designed inlaid wood. Some wonderful examples can be found in this museum, housed in an 18th-century palace, complete with beautiful frescoes.

There’s also an interesting collection of paintings, prints and photographs depicting the town and surrounding area in the 19th century.

Cloister of Saint Francis

Founded in the 8th century, the building that now houses the Church of San Francisco (San Francesco) has History – just like that, with a capital H. To begin with, it was founded by Saint Anthony himself, the patron saint of Sorrento, to be an oratory, and only later was it transformed into a church, already in the 16th century, by Franciscan friars.

Rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, the Church of San Francesco is full of art (among frescoes, statues and paintings, including from other parts of the world). Outside, you can see the statue of the Immaculate Virgin (at the top of the building) and a beautiful wooden door from the 16th century.

Also visit the Cloister of San Francisco (Chiostro di San Francesco), adjacent to the Church, still used as a residence for Franciscan monks. It’s beautiful, filled with trees and ornamental plants that curl around the stone pillars.

The Cloister has undergone many restorations over the centuries, so you can see a mixture of architectural styles – with Renaissance, Arab and Gothic influences.

Basilica of Saint Anthony

Sorrento Tours

Near the cloister of San Francesco is a religious building with baroque and romanesque architectural elements. In the basilica are the remains of St. Anthony, the patron saint of the city.

In the church there are the bones of a whale: legend has it that St. Anthony a child has swallowed saved just by that whale.

Cathedral

Walking along Via Pietà from Piazza Tasso, you will pass two medieval palaces on the way to the Duomo Cathedral.

The Cathedral has an impressive external fresco and a bell tower on three levels, as well as four classical columns and a majolica clock (a type of enameled crockery much appreciated in Italy from the Renaissance onwards).

Hours: 8:00 am to 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Marina Grande

Its pasing a variety of hotels and villas and less than 15 minutes later, arrives in one of Sorrento’s most popular quarters: Marina Grande,  a picturesque fishing village in the western part of Sorrento. Marina Grande is set around a small bay and features several hotels and restaurants right on the shoreline.

Despite Sorrento’s popularity with international tourists, Marina Grande still has the rustic charm and laid-back quality of an ancient fishing harbor and fishing is still an active trade here.

Public Garden

Villa Comunale is the largest public garden in Sorrento and is laid out with flower beds and shaded by trees.

There are busts of historian Bartolomeo Capasso and Sorrento-born magistrate and lawyer Francesco Saverio Gargiulo in the gardens and benches are provided so that you can sit and relax while you enjoy the view. There is a beach directly below and during the day you will see the tiny figures of swimmers in the sea.

You can walk down to either Marina Piccola or Marina Grande from here or stop for refreshments at the bar to the right of the gardens from where you can continue to enjoy the view.

Its distinctive feature is being literally overlooking the sea. From here you can take in the entire Bay of Naples.
