WHAT’S IN OUR TOUR?
From Vatican City to Spanish Steps
VISIT
Basilica of Saint Peter – Castle of the Holy Angel – Piazza Navona – Pantheon – Spanish Steps
HIGHLIGHTS
Visiting St. Peter’s Basilica is free. But to get inside the Basilica, you have to be patient for the queue for the metal detector.
‘You are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church’. The famous biblical phrase has been taken as literally as possible by Catholics.
They say that the body of Saint Peter, condemned to death on a cross in the year 64AD. he was buried in a simple tomb on Vatican Hill, on the outskirts of Rome.
Years passed and the place where Peter’s tomb was supposed to be was transformed into a shrine. About 300 years after her death, St. Peter’s Basilica was born in that place, built by order of Emperor Constantine.
But this is not the church we see today. The original was destroyed, reformed, rebuilt. In the construction of the current building, names such as Rafael Sanzio, Bernini and Michelangelo participated.
About 150 years were needed to complete the works, with the following centuries still seeing a tweak here and there.
Facts about the Basilica
St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most visited places in Christianity, capable of holding up to 60,000 devotees in its 23,000 square meter area.
The numbers are also impressive in the Basilica, with its 218 meters in length, with only the dome measuring 42 meters in diameter. Another 46 altars, 233 windows and countless statues and ornaments.
St. Peter’s Basilica is officially not a cathedral – that’s churches attended by a bishop. The official home of the popes, bishops of Rome, is the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, in the Laterano district.
A lot of people get confused, because after all, St. Peter’s Basilica is used a lot in papal masses.
If you are passionate about art and visit religious temples, you will be delighted with the visit to St. Peter’s Basilica. There are many, many things to visit. Right at the entrance, in the first chapel of the corridor to the right of the central altar, is one of Michelangelo’s most important works.
The Pietà, is the famous statue of the Virgin Mary carrying the body of Jesus. The statue was carved in the 15th century, and today it is protected by a glass that does not let anyone get too close. In 1972, a man attacked the work with a hammer and damaged the Virgin Mary.
A tailor-made service according to your needs
The only good thing about the accident was that, with the restoration, a monogram by Michelangelo was revealed on Maria’s hand: an M drawn in the lines of the hand, which was hidden for almost 5 centuries!
Leaving the Basilica we walked along the Via della Conciliazione, where we find souvenir shops and religious articles, until reaching the second stop of the itinerary: Castel Sant’Angelo.
Inside the Castle, you can contemplate the elegant apartments of the Popes of the Renaissance, their period furniture, sumptuous decorations and frescoed walls. Among them, do not forget to admire the so-called Sala Paolina and his illusionist trompe-l’oeil frescoes by Perin del Vaga and Pellegrino Tibaldi. Also the secret passage “passetto”, that unites the city of the Vatican to the castle, that from the Middle Ages until 16th century, was often used by popes to escape the looting of enemies.
The castle is situated on the banks of the River Tiber, right in front of the Sant’Angelo bridge, decorated by statues of angels, is of a unique beauty!
We cross and on the other side the left, arrived at the crowded Piazza Navona. Here and in the streets around we find ice cream shops, pizzerias and restaurants where you can take a break.
Professional Driver will give you a tour around Rome were u will all the special places!
From here we cross the Corso del Rinascimento, the Palazzo Madama is the Senate building of the Italian Republic and is behind Pantheon Square. Construction began in the time of Pope Sixtus IV, when medieval Rome was becoming a more modern city.
The palace grounds had belonged to Benedictine monks for centuries and they donated the land to the French government.
It was then bequeathed it to a bishop who constructed the palace building. This was completed in 1505 by Cardinal John de Medici, the future Pope Leo X. It was the seat of the Medicis family, where the future Queen of France (Catherine de Medicis) passed some time.
The name of “Madama” is for Margaret of Parma, daughter of Charles V, who lived here.
It’s been the seat of the Senate since the late nineteenth century.
We continue through a series of narrow streets that lead you to Piazza della Rotonda is the square right outside the Pantheon, temple consecrated by the greeks and romans to all the gods. Giant imposing, passed through all the ages of our history.

Ancient Rome, medieval, papal, Renaissance, until becoming the undisputed protagonist of the capital Rome, when it was chosen, by the kings of unified Italy, as the tabernacle of the new kingdom.
From piazza della Rotonda, we enter via dei Pastini, to the piazza di Pietra, with the great Temple of Hadrian, we continue along the via di Pietra until the via del Corso Umberto, crossing the via delle Muratte which leads to Piazza di Trevi.
In the distance one can hear the noise of the water running on the stone of the Trevi Fountain. If you want to return in this special place again, turns his back and tosses a coin into the fountain, as suggested by an ancient custom.
The day comes to an end, but Rome still has a surprise for you! From Trevi Fountain we take the Via della Stamperia to Via del Tritone, cross the street, we walked along the Via Due Macelli, which takes us to Spanish Steps.
