Your private tour starts with a van that will pick you up from your hotel or accommodation and in just under two and a half hours you will be at the gateway to Pompeii.

The visit to the archaeological site normally takes 2 hours or a little more. It’s not very comprehensive, but it will give you the opportunity to discover the history of this ancient city. When it was conquered by the Romans, it quickly became a commercial center of great importance.

POMPEII

Strolling around Pompeii is a true trip back in time. Ruins represent all the places that a city can have: temples, forum, houses of famous characters of that time, spa or meeting houses. The site is divided into regions numbered with Roman numerals.

Great amphitheater is located in II, close to Porta Nocera, the furthest point from Porta Marina, region VIII. Some corners have signs indicating which region you are in and main attractions.

In addition to the domus (houses) and temples, you can see the pavement, the highest stones used as a crosswalk, the marks of carriage and wagon wheels, fountains, storage sheds for vases and other objects found on the site. In addition to the frames of bodies found at various points, you will also find archaeologists working on new excavations!

Vesuvius you will see from several points, always alert, proudly peeking at his work, reminding us that even from bad experiences we can extract good results.

Civil Forum was a large rectangular square, the core of everyday life in Pompeii; epicenter of the main public buildings for administration and justice in the city. Management of business and commercial activities, including markets, as well as major places of worship.

Forum square underwent several modifications over time, having been significantly modified between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, when the square was surrounded by porticoes and the bottom was paved with tuff slabs. The axis of the Forum of Pompeii became the appearance of the Temple of Jupiter, aligned with Mount Vesuvius which, despite being visible from almost everywhere, has a prominent position on the forum’s horizon.

Antiquary (Visitors Center)

Just after passing Porta Marina, you will find the historic Antiquary (now called the Visitor’s Centre) which would be a good first stop before walking around the city as it shows all of the city in three dimensions. The Antiquary was originally built by Giuseppe Fiorelli between 1873 and 1874 in the area below the terrace of the Temple of Venus.

At that time, it was the setting for an exhibition of a selection of finds representative of everyday life in the city, as well as casts of victims of the eruption of Vesuvius. Then it was seriously damaged after the second world war and the earthquake of 1980 until it was completely renovated with this new layout and opened in 2016.

Amphitheater

Built in 70 BC, historians claim that this is the oldest known Roman amphitheater, a kind of Coliseum in Pompeii, it is also well preserved (much more than the one in Rome that was built only 100 years later.). It is a building of generous proportions, with a capacity for 20,000 people and in an oval shape, gladiator fights and chariot races took place there.

Often, inhabitants of neighboring cities traveled to Pompeii just to watch the events taking place there. Even today it is possible to see frescoes of gladiators on its walls.

Vettii House

Located on Vicolo di Mercurio, it is one of the most interesting and famous houses in Pompeii. It was owned by the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, two middle class merchants and this shows that it was not just the aristocracy that lived well in elegantly decorated houses. Right at the entrance, you can see the painting of Priapus, the God of prosperity, symbolizing the fortune acquired by its owners. The garden is its focal point, with several statues.

This house has some of the best frescoes, as well as a peristyle that still has its original marble decor, and whose garden has been replanted, so you can see what it was like when people lived here. kitchen still contains your cooking utensils. The walls under the peristyle colonnade are also painted to imitate the panels, the colors are especially intense.

House of the Faun

It was the biggest house in the city with 3000 square meters, a kind of mansion where the wealth and social level of the owner are evident: the sidewalk bears the inscription of welcome in Latin; the door is majestic and framed by pillars with decorated capitals; and the entrance floor is inlaid with multicolored marble triangles.

The house is especially famous for a statue of Faunus in a fountain in the atrium and for the mosaics depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius, King of Persia. The original sculpture and mosaics are in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. It is possible to enter the ruins of the mansion and see up close what the layout of a wealthy house in Ancient Rome was like, with several internal courtyards, fountains and gardens.

After a tour of houses and public spaces embellished with statues and paintings, your driver will take you to the historic city of Positano. You will have time to stroll through the streets of the old town and along the promenade that connects the beaches of Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo.

POSITANO

It is a very suggestive walk that passes by the Saracen towers, watchtowers built to defend against pirate attacks.

Positano is the most photogenic town on the Amalfi Coast and a popular luxury vacation spot. The best thing about the city isn’t its monuments (the only thing that stands out, by the way, is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta), but the whole scenery, which is breathtaking. Walk down the alleys to the main beach, where you can see the colorful little houses stretching across the steep mountain to the sea.

Positano tourist attractions:

Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Spiaggia Grande (main beach)

If you want to go home with a souvenir, you have many options to choose from. Positano is known for its handmade sandals and the flagship store is Safari (Via della Tartana 2). To go home with a bottle of limoncello or an assortment of local delicatessen, I recommend you head to Valenti (Via Guglielmo Marconi 142).

In the afternoon, your driver will accompany you back to Rome. Keep in mind that this is a long tour and it’s best to wear comfortable shoes. If you’re traveling in the summer, don’t forget your hat too.

Duration: about 12 hours
Recommended for those who are interested in a route that combines history with a visit to a typical Mediterranean village.
