A walk around the city shows the diversity of attractions, even if they are not so obvious at first glance.

Botanical garden, fairs, historic squares and museums are there for those willing to explore this beautiful city, land of Galileo Galilei and inspiration for great works, such as The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. Ready to discover Pisa beyond Piazza dei Miracoli? Then take a look at these attractions:

Leaning Tower

The Tower of Pisa, also called the Leaning Tower, located in the city of Pisa is one of the main tourist attractions in Italy and has become famous all over the world for its tilt.

It is located in Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), and is part of the monumental complex of buildings in Pisa, along with other important attractions of the city. The Leaning Tower actually corresponds to the Bell Tower of Pisa Cathedral, which is where the church bells are located. All of this incredible architectural complex in the square has been considered a UNESCO heritage site since 1987 and masterfully represents the role of maritime and economic power that Pisa has developed over the centuries.

The History of the Tower of Pisa

The curious Tower of Pisa, with a cylindrical shape, began to be built in 1173, paused its construction around 1275 and was completed only in the second half of the 13th century. Because it was installed in an unstable area, with clay and sand soil, its structure gave way over the years. When they realized that the tower was really leaning, different strategies were adopted to keep it upright.

After being closed to the public at the risk of collapsing, the Tower of Pisa was reopened in 2001 after a long process of renovation and support maneuvers to avoid a steeper inclination of the building. Today, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is in safe condition and it is even possible to access its top by booking a ticket.

Ortho Botanic

The botanical garden of Pisa has some very ancient species, such as the American Leccio della Virginia, planted in the garden in 1829. At 22 meters high and 4.1 meters wide, the tree is impressive. Another tree that draws attention is the President’s Palm, also American.

A curiosity is the Garden of Medicinal Plants, visited by Pisan students almost every day. There, we can see species that promise to cure many diseases. There is also a very beautiful bamboo garden and several benches spread throughout the space, making the garden a pleasant place to relax between one walk and another. The place was built between 1543 and 1544, at the behest of the powerful Cosimo I de Medici, a member of the clan that dominated Florence in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Piazza dei Cavalieri

Piazza dei Cavalieri is an important historic square in Pisa. In fact, after Piazza dei Miracoli, Piazza dei Cavalieri is the most famous in the city. During Roman and medieval times, it was the center of meetings and discussions, as well as the seat of the Roman forum of Pisa. In the 16th century, it was remodeled by the famous architect Giorgio Vasari, who made the square a reference center of Renaissance architecture, very spacious.

In the center of the piazza, we can see the statue of Cosimo I di Medici, member of the powerful Medici family, who ordered the construction of the Church of the Knights of Santo Stefano, also designed by Vasari. Currently, the piazza gathers important monuments, such as the Palazzo dell’Orologio (read more about the attraction below), the Scuola Normale di Pisa and the Chiesa di San Stefano dei Cavalieri.

The site is taken over by tourists and students during the day, as the square is part of the University of Pisa complex. At night, it is used as a meeting point for groups of young people. The city hall organizes several events there, considering that the square is quite spacious.

Palazzo dell’Orologio

The Palazzo dell’Orologio was, during medieval times, the residence of the Capitano del Popolo (captain of the people). During the construction of the palace, the remains of the Torre della Muda were incorporated, where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca and his children and grandchildren died. You may not remember this story, but it was told in Dante Alighieri’s famous work The Divine Comedy. Mad for power, Ugolino became involved in a political alliance with Archbishop Ruggieri. Later Ugolino was accused of treason and confined in a tower with his children and grandchildren in 1289 without food. According to popular accounts and the literature of Dante Alighieri, Ugolino would have devoured his offspring.

Recently, scientists and paleontologists stated that DNA tests showed that Ugolino probably did not devour his children and grandchildren. True or not, what matters today is that the building is still there to be seen. In the arch of the Palazzo dell’Orologio, it is possible to see traces of the Torre della Muda. The construction that joined the two buildings was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1554. Today, the palace functions as a library.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II

Located opposite Stazione Pisa Centrale, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is one of Pisa’s shopping centres. In the place, there is a daily market of typically Italian foods, as well as clothes and bags. You can taste food from various regions of Italy (try the Arancina, from Sicily-it’s a deep-fried ball of dough with a filling). It is in the Sicilian tent and costs 3 euros. The fair runs throughout the afternoon.

Also, there are nice cafes in the square. In the center, a statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Sardinia between 1849 and 1861, who eventually became King of Italy until his death in 1878. He was the first King of Italy since the 6th century. The square deserves a visit to check out the fair, as well as being close to the Murale Tuttomondo.
