An eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered this ancient city in ash some 2,000 years ago, and marvel at the well-preserved ruins that froze the city in time. Stroll through the well-preserved streets of the ancient Roman city, admiring historic attractions such as the Forum, thermal baths and Lupanar. Visit the imperial way of life and the massive volcanic eruption that buried the city in volcanic material and decimated all population that had not fled the area.

Pompeii or Pompei, in the native language, is an Italian city located about 250 km from Rome. This ancient Roman city was hit by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and is now an archaeological site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With an area of about 66 hectares (50 hectares excavated), Pompeii is a unique example of a Roman city, which brings together frescoes, mosaics, buildings for public use and private homes of families who lived in the city centuries ago. The ash and lava fragments from the volcano completely covered the region, hiding it for many years.

Pompeii was only rediscovered in the 16th century, but without much effort to know or explore it. The city was actually excavated only in 1748, more than 1600 years after the volcano eruption that destroyed it. The huge accumulation of ash and volcanic debris that ended Pompeii and hid it for so many years is also responsible for having preserved all the structure and construction of this Roman city so well.

Pompeii has a dynamic similar to that of other common cities today: it has its alleys, its residences, its temples and buildings for common use, but the difference, of course, is that it is a city with more than 2 thousand years of history, which persists to the present day with well-preserved ruins. The tour of the archaeological site is dedicated to exploring the ancient city, admiring its constructions, visiting some buildings internally, observing its works of art and objects used in the Roman period.

The tour is done on foot and as it is a very extensive archaeological site, it takes a long time to get to know it, especially for those who are more curious to understand the local history. I recommend a whole day for the tour because there are many peculiarities of the place and the tour deserves to be done calmly.

What to see in Pompeii

Some places arouse more curiosity within Pompeii, including:

Casa dei Vettii – one of the most beautiful houses with rich interior paintings

Foro Civile: it is the heart of the city, where the public buildings of the city administration and justice of the time are located. In this region are, for example, the temple of Giove and the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Casa del Fauno – one of the largest houses in Pompeii, with a mosaic that says “Have” or “welcome” in Latin

Villa dei Misteri – this villa has well-preserved frescoes, beautiful wall decorations and even an area where wine was produced

Casa del Poeta Tragico – this house is famous for a mosaic at the entrance, which in Latin says “beware of the dog”

Amphitheater – built in 70 BC, the place could hold up to 20,000 spectators in its shows

Casa dei mosaici geometrici (House of Geometric Mosaics) – Huge Pompeii house with over 60 rooms

Stroll through the well-preserved streets of the ancient Roman city

There is not much need to buy the Pompeii ticket in advance! Just go to the park entrance and buy it. It is common to have a queue to buy the ticket, but on the occasion of our trip (May) the queue was very small and moved quickly. If you insist, you can buy the Pompeii ticket online.

– Pompeii is a large archaeological site, which is known through hiking. Therefore, on the day of your visit, wear appropriate clothing for outdoor walks, avoid carrying heavy backpacks and go with comfortable shoes! The streets of the archaeological site are made of stone and earth, so the ideal thing is that you have closed shoes, like tennis shoes, which will provide more comfort.

– There is a restaurant and cafeteria inside the archaeological site of Pompeii, so you can spend the whole day there, calmly make stops to eat and then continue your tour. The eating area is closed, there is a cafeteria for fast foods like panini, sandwiches, juices, coffee and also a restaurant with pizza and lasagna, for example. At lunch time, the place is full, so it might be a good idea to plan to eat a little earlier or a little later than the usual lunch time.

– The archaeological site is all open and outdoors, if possible, choose to go to the place on a day with little chance of rain.

– If your visit will be made during high season or even on a weekend, try to arrive at the place as soon as the archaeological site opens to find it emptier.
