Discover the charms of Pisa on a day trip from Rome with your own private driver
Excursion to Pisa from Rome | Private Service
Rome has no shortage of cultural treasures. But so many travelers know about them that the Eternal City can get very crowded. That’s why we designed this day trip: so that you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city to explore one of Tuscany’s most visited wonders.
Your private Pisa tour from Rome transports you through the Tuscan countryside to visit Florence’s great historic rival: Pisa. You’ll visit the vertically challenged Leaning Tower of Pisa where – subject to advance booking and availability – you’ll scale its dizzying heights.
Leaving for the subject that really matters which is what to do in Pisa and its attractions. The city goes beyond the tower and the cathedral, so we’ll leave you with tips on sights and tours to do there.
Tower of Pisa
No wonder this 14th-century tower attracts so much attention. With its winding staircase of nearly 300 steps and disorienting five-degree slope, this architectural freak of nature has intrigued and baffled visitors for centuries. The Leaning Tower is pretty safe for now! Just don’t rule out an impromptu reenactment of Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” while you’re there.
Getting to know the famous Tower and climbing it are the main activities in the city. If your intention is to go up, remember that only 30 people are allowed every 20 minutes in the tower, that is, you will most likely queue.
Tickets sell out quickly depending on the season, so it is advisable to buy them online. This is also important because it is necessary to make an appointment to visit the tower.
It is recommended to arrive 30 minutes in advance to avoid problems. At the entrance, you must leave your backpack in the locker and from there get ready, as there are 297 spiral steps. The complete ascent and descent tour lasts a maximum of 35 minutes.
Piazza Del Duomo
As you might expect from one of the most powerful medieval city-states in the Mediterranean, Pisa has a remarkable architectural legacy. Its 12th-century Duomo easily rivals those in Florence and Siena. In the Square of Miracles are four levels colonnaded in white stone and dark gray marble, while within the Duomo’s richly ornamented interior are resplendent works of art such as a Cimabue apse mosaic.
Piazza del Duomo is surrounded by a fortress from which you can visit the walls and gates. At the entrance there are several souvenir and street food stalls for you to try some different Italian foods.
On the other hand, in the inner part of the wall where Piazza Del Duomo is located, there are several museums and the tower. In addition, in this area you will find some restaurants and cafes to take a break to admire the beauty of the area.
Baptistery
Another must-see attraction in the Square of Miracles is the Pisa Baptistry of St. John. Completed in 1363, this part Romanesque and Gothic marble structure is a veritable visual feast. As the largest baptistery in Italy, its interior architecture is impressive. Though stripped of ornamentation, it has an amazing colonnaded dome and a 13th-century pulpit.
Camposanto Monumentale
The Camposanto Monumentale is the city’s cemetery and one of the most important in Italy. Maybe you can already understand by the word “Monumentale”, that this is not just any cemetery, right? I don’t usually visit cemeteries when I travel, but in this case, I only found out that it was one
Other sights in Pisa
If you decide to stay in the city for more than a day, there are also other interesting activities to discover, such as:
Santa Maria della Spina: small church in Gothic style, from the 22nd century
Palazzo della Carovana: former headquarters, but today it is a school but today it is a school
Orto Botânico: botanical garden of the University of the city
Palazzo Blu: center for cultural activities and exhibitions, located in Palazzo Gualandi
Corso Italia and Borgo Stretto: shopping streets
To visit the Cathedral you pay nothing if you have already purchased the ticket for the tower, for example. However, we recommend taking a guided tour to learn more about the history of the place.
