PERUGIA

The Umbrian capital is less than 30 kilometers from Spello. Perugia also extends upwards, in a tangle of stairs and streets uphill. The historic center, at almost 500 meters high, requires stamina and disposition, rewarded with the local artistic beauty and unexpected panoramas.

Piazza IV Novembre and the Fontana Maggiore form the unmissable duo of the central core – the fountain is a medieval masterpiece. Straight ahead, the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo stands out as it was never finished.

On the other side of the quadrilateral that forms the central square, lies the majestic Palazzo dei Priori, one of the most precious spaces in Perugia: there is the Galleria Nazionale, which brings together an important collection of artists from the city, including Pinturicchio and Beato Angelico, who produced in the 15th century, and the Collegio del Cambio, which conserves a room with frescoes by Perugino, another renowned local Renaissance artist.

But it is in the hidden streets that the small treasures of the city are discovered. The Chapel San Severo, in Piazza Raffaello, has a fresco that Raffaello started but did not have time to finish; after the artist’s death, the work was completed by Perugino (the former signed the upper part of the composition, the latter the lower part). Of the many pieces Raphael made in Perugia, the fresco of the 15th century Chapel di San Severo is the only one that remained in the city.

A four-minute walk away is Perugia’s highest point, the Sole. The sunset seen from there is incredible. 1 kilometer away is the Tempio di Sant’Angelo, a tiny circular church is Roman-style church, with a Roman cloister on both sides of the church, and the interior is beautifully decorated with gold-plated carvings.

Perugia is known for having two important higher education institutions, the Università degli Studi and the Università per Stranieri. For this reason, the city has a young and festive atmosphere, a bit different from the Umbrian neighborhood. Piazza Francesco Morlacchi is one of the meeting points for students.

You can stop at La Bottega di Perugia snack bar, which is located in the square and serves good sandwiches (be sure to try the local sausages!). Very close by, Via del Priori, full of palaces and medieval finds, is the right place for an unpretentious walk, especially for those who like to window shop and discover typical products.

At number 26, optics Ozona sells different and exclusive models of frames. Il Pozzo delle Ceramiche, number 70, has hand-decorated artisan ceramics. Osteria a Priori, with an Italian pun, is located at number 39 and is a reference in dishes with regional ingredients and slow food.

GUBBIO

50 kilometers north of Perugia, Gubbio is worth a special visit, it deserves a full day visit. San Francisco, again he, lived remarkable passages there. It is the place that welcomed him after he decided to dedicate himself to his new life, completely deprived of possessions.

It was in the hospital of São Lázaro that he began his work with the humble, assisting lepers. The story goes that Francis calmed a wolf that was terrorizing the city. In honor of his calming personality, the city has the Chiesa di San Francesco della Pace.

Gubbio also conserves a large part of its wall, built in the 13th century, but its foundation dates back to the 3rd century BC. The ruins of the Roman amphitheater, open to visitors, are a legacy of a rich past – the Romans only built amphitheaters in really important cities.

The best starting point to start exploring Gubbio’s narrow streets is the cathedral, which still retains two 16th-century organs. In Piazza Grande, a five-minute walk from the church, is Palazzo Pretorio, an unfinished Gothic building, and , in front of it, the greatest Gubbian symbol, the Palazzo dei Consoli, also dating from the “Medioevo”, where the Archaeological Museum and the Pinacoteca are located.

The Seven Tablets of Gubbio, pieces of immeasurable historical value for the Italic people, were forged in bronze and written in ancient Umbrian, a dialect that precedes Latin – it is presumed that they were carved between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC.

The two palaces on Piazza Grande were built at the same time, when the city was expanding and the need was felt to reaffirm its importance with a public space in keeping with its grandeur.

Icing on the cake: one of the best restaurants in all of Umbria is 300 meters from the square. Taverna del Lupo is housed in a historic building from the 14th century, with very old stone walls and pillars. Homemade pasta is a local star. It is good to make a reservation, especially in summer.
