Sant’Angelo Rome Tickets. The impressive Castel Sant’Angelo is the only building that accompanied the fate and development of Rome for almost two thousand years, unlike other Romanesque monuments that suffered a more disastrous fate, having been reduced to ruins or quarries of bare materials for recycling in new and modern buildings.
Over the centuries, Castel Sant’Angelo has undergone several transformations, both architecturally and structurally and for the purpose of use: built in 123 AD. It was born as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian and his family. However, Hadrian died in 138 AD, before the construction of the mausoleum was finished, a year later Antoninus Pius dedicated the tomb to the emperor and transferred the remains of Hadrian and his wife Sabina to this formidable monument. In 403, it lost its original function to become an outpost to defend Rome; At the beginning of the 11th century, it assumed the role of a state prison; In the 14th century, after several transfers of ownership between families of the Roman nobility, Castel Sant’Angelo definitively linked its destiny to that of the pontiffs.
In the 19th century, it again occupied the role of prison until 1906, when it became a fascinating museum, ready to share its great historical baggage with the world.
In 1925 it became the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo.
