EXPLORE TUSCANY IN ONE DAY: SIENA AND SAN GIMIGNANO FROM ROME HIGHLIGHTS:

SIENA

Rome to Tuscany

The first stop is the central square, Piazza del Campo, which is shaped like a half moon.

Piazza del CampoPiazza del CampoPiazza del Campo
It is in this square that the Palio di Siena, a horse race between the 17 districts of the city, takes place.

The event takes place on the 2nd of July and the 16th of August since the 13th century. Other historic buildings are in this square, such as the Palazzo Comunale or Palazzo Pubblico. The town hall building is from the 14th century and has a Gothic style.

Inside the building we find a replica of the Capitoline Wolf nursing the twins Romulus and Remus. According to Roman mythology, Siena was founded by Senius, son of Remus.

The Torre del Mangia is another attraction in the square. At 102 metres, the 14th-century medieval tower was once one of the tallest in Italy and is the same height as Siena Cathedral, as a sign of equality between church and state.

The Cathedral or Duomo di Siena is also medieval and is yet another example of Italian Gothic architecture. The church was built from 1215 to 1263. Façade is by the sculptor Giovanni Pisano and represents the prophets, philosophers and apostles.

In the external and internal parts of the Duomo, black and white marble is used, the symbolic colors of Siena, which are also in the coat of arms of the city. The colors derive from the horses of the founders of Siena, Senius and Aschius.

In another part of the city it is still possible to see the old medieval fort of Siena, the Fortezza Medicea or Fort of Santa Bárbara, built between 1561 and 1563 by order of Duke Cosimo de’Medici.

Today, there is a park overlooking the city.

SAN GIMIGNANO

Surrounded by 13th-century walls and perched atop a hill, the area of San Gimignano has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it wasn’t until the Early Etruscan Era that people began to settle permanently there.
At the beginning of the Middle Ages, in the 10th century, the oldest part of the old town center was founded, but it was not until 1199, at the end of the Middle Ages, that San Gimignano became an independent city.

Since 998, San Gimignano was an important crossing point for Christian pilgrims making the Via Francigena from France to Rome, which contributed to the growth of the city.

At its peak in the 1300s, the city had 72 towers (some 50 meters high and with walls up to 2 meters thick), one for each family in San Gimignano. It was a way for residents to show off their wealth. The higher the tower, which also served as a home, the wealthier the family.

Only 13 of these towers remain, the others turned into ruins when the city fell into decay after becoming part of the Republic of Florence in 1354. 56 km from Florence, San Gimignano is another beautiful attraction in Tuscany, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

With less than five square kilometers of historic center and just over 7,000 inhabitants, the city is home to museums open all day, such as the curious Museum of Torture.

In addition to modern and contemporary art galleries. Small shops selling colorful ceramics make San Gimignano even more charming. The city is also known for its wine and saffron, much bought by Italian tourists.

Another attraction is the Duomo di San Gimignano, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, which is from the 12th century and has frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio.

In Piazza del Duomo is the Palazzo Comunale, which contains the Sala di Dante, decorated with important cycles of frescoes.

The Pinacoteca is also located in the palace, with works from the period between the 13th and 17th centuries. Behind the Palazzo Comunale, it is possible to access Torre Grossa, the highest in the city and where there is a museum.

To get to the tower, we pass through an inner courtyard from the 14th and 15th centuries, decorated with frescoes of coats of arms of characters who held public office in the municipality. With the exception of museums, access to all these spaces and balconies is free.

It is worth paying attention to the details that decorate the facades. From the various viewpoints of San Gimignano we have a beautiful view of Tuscany, the best landscapes we have seen in this region of Italy.

There is no rush to admire this look. This is the kind of city where you can get lost in its narrow streets, admire the beauty of the little things in your routine… and discover different corners and points of view of the historic city of San Gimignano.

Stroll through the gardens and simply let time pass.
