Best day trip from Rome to Pisa
If you are staying in Rome for a long time, we recommend that you take a day trip. A perfect destination for a day trip from Rome to Pisa. What makes it even better is that you can visit this city in just one day. We bring you everything you need to know about the best tour from Rome to Pisa.
Square of Miracles
Our walking tour of Pisa can only start from Piazza dei Miracoli (or rather, Piazza del Duomo), included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987. The monuments that you can visit in this huge green square are the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Monumental Cemetery and, of course, the Tower. These are the monuments that form the core of the city’s religious life, defined as “miracles” by Gabriele d’Annunzio in 1910 for their extreme beauty and particularity. Hence the misnomer of Piazza dei Miracoli.
Baptistery of San Giovanni
Arriving at Piazza dei Miracoli, the first building you will notice is the Baptistery dedicated to San Giovanni, the largest in Italy. Its construction lasted more than a century and that is why the building mixes Romanesque and Gothic styles. The visit to the Baptistery costs 5 euros and the ticket can be purchased online from 20 days to 1 day before the visit. Admission is free for disabled visitors with their companion and for children under 11 years old. If you also want to visit Camposanto, there is a combined ticket that, at the price of 7 euros, allows access to both. For just one more euro, you can also access the Sinopie Museum.
The Cathedral of Pisa
In the center of Piazza dei Miracoli is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a medieval cathedral in Romanesque style. Some of the most beautiful works that can be admired inside the Cathedral are the Gothic pulpit sculpted by Giovanni Pisano, the Tomb of Emperor Henry VII by Tino da Camaino and the mosaic of Christ in Glory, completed by Cimabue in 1302.
Visiting Pisa Cathedral is free for everyone, but you still need a ticket. If you buy online the entrance to another of the monuments in Piazza dei Miracoli, of your choice, you will also receive a ticket for the Cathedral, free and without schedule. On the other hand, free hourly tickets for visits to the Cathedral only can be picked up directly on site, at the ticket offices, on the day of the visit, subject to availability.
The Monumental Cemetery
The Camposanto, built by Giovanni di Simone in 1278 to house the tombs spread around the Cathedral, was the last monument to be erected in Piazza del Duomo. In the 14th century some wonderful frescoes were painted, many of which unfortunately were destroyed in a fire in July 1944.
Camposanto can be visited for the price of 5 euros, or for the price of 7 euros in combination with the Baptistery. Tickets can be purchased online or directly on site. Admission is free for children under 11 years old and for visitors with a disability and their companion.
Climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower is certainly the most famous monument in Piazza dei Miracoli and one of the most famous in Italy. Originally though, it should have just been the bell tower of the cathedral. The works for the construction of the bell tower began in 1173, but were interrupted in the middle of the third floor due to a sinking of the foundations. The floor of the square, in fact, is made of soft and very malleable clay. The works were resumed in 1275 and, in an attempt to straighten the tower, the next three floors were built with a slight inclination in the opposite direction.
Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous restorations, which have reduced its inclination, which today stands at around 4°.
Can you climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa? The answer is yes! The ticket costs 18 euros and buying online is strongly recommended because tickets, divided by time, sell out quickly. For security reasons, entry is not allowed for children under 8 years old or to be completed in the current year. The entry of minors under 18 years old unaccompanied by an adult is also prohibited. The ascent is on foot and has 251 steps, so the visit is not recommended for people with mobility problems.
