Domus Aurea (Golden House)
The ruins of Emperor Nero’s sumptuous residence, an opulent palace that wowed the ancient world.
Built after the fire that devastated much of Rome in the year 64, the Domus Aurea or Golden House was a Roman palace complex and the residence of Emperor Nero. The enormous building located in the Roman Forum was designed to exalt imperial power, and its 300 luxurious rooms boasted decorations made with precious stones, ivory, frescoes, mosaics and fountains.
Almost two millennia later, this incredible building is a sample of the perfectionism of Roman architecture and the extravagance of Emperor Nero. Even with much of the building in ruins due to time and several lootings, we can visit some of its rooms and see the palace’s decoration.
As many of the buildings in the Roman Forum were demolished and some of their parts used as the basis for new constructions, the same happened with the Domus Aurea. In addition to the visiting area of the original palace, the atrium of the house was used for the construction of the Temple of Venus and Roma in 117, by Emperor Hadrian.
Today, the site is visited through guided tours and you can use virtual reality glasses to see what the Domus Aurea was like in the past.
The Domus Aurea is located near the Colosseum and tickets can be purchased on the Colosseum website. But be careful: the attraction is usually only open three days a week (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) and we recommend buying your ticket in advance!
Circus Maximus
The ancient chariot racing stadium, an imposing venue that could accommodate hundreds of thousands of spectators.
Roman circuses were the most important recreational facilities in Roman cities, in addition to theaters and amphitheatres. They were elongated enclosures where public games, chariot races and various shows were held.
The Circus Maximus in Rome (Circo Massimo), located between the Aventine and Palatine hills, was an elongated enclosure with space for 300,000 spectators. The sand track, 600 meters long and 225 meters wide, made the Circus Maximus the largest in Rome, ahead of the Circus Flaminius and the Circus of Maxentius.

The Circus Maximus hosted various competitions, among which the chariot races stood out, in which participants attempted to complete seven laps of the Circus. The competitors, riding in small chariots pulled by horses, raced not only for prestige or great prizes, since many of them were slaves fighting for their freedom.
During the public games there were also equestrian exhibitions, known as “Ludus Troianus”, a simulation of battles performed by young Roman aristocrats, or foot races, which lasted several hours. All competitions were motivated by the important bets that were made.
