1- Piazza Navona
In the Roman Empire, where Piazza Navona is today, there was the Stadium of Domitian, a space where thousands of Roman citizens would gather and watch the sports of the time. Since the Renaissance, the square has been decorated with three beautiful fountains: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno. Tip: this is a great place to visit during Christmas time! From the beginning of December, several stalls selling handmade nativity scenes, Christmas decorations and typical sweets are on display there.
2- Campo dei Fiori
Another beautiful square to include in your travel itinerary! Despite its beauty, the place has a somewhat dark past: it was there where the philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned on charges of heresy in the year 1600. Today, however, an imposing statue in honor of the theorist adorns Campo dei Fiori. Another attraction worth visiting is the flower, food and various products fair that takes place there.
3- Castel Sant’Angelo (Castel Sant’Angelo)
Built on the ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, Castel Sant’Angelo impresses with its stunning architecture. A wonderful view can be enjoyed from its terrace: you can see the city, the Tiber River and even a small part of St. Peter’s Basilica. 4- St. Peter’s Square and Basilica

5- Vatican Museums (Musei Vaticani)

But the main point of interest in the square is actually the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo. The temple is small compared to other Roman monuments, but it has immense artistic importance. This is because in the 16th century some of the greatest Renaissance artists, such as Raphael and Caravaggio, were commissioned to decorate the walls and ceilings of the church’s chapels.
7- Passeggiata del Pincio
This place is between Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo, so it might be a good idea to include it in your itinerary. From the top of one of Rome’s hills, you’ll have an excellent view of Piazza del Popolo (above). From up there, it’s worth admiring the view, trying to identify points of interest in Rome and planning your next steps in the city! 15- Villa Borghese

8- Piazza di Spagna
This square is mainly famous for its 135-step staircase leading up to the Trinità dei Monti church. Piazza di Spagna is a meeting point for Roman citizens, but its steps can also be a good resting place for tourists. 😉 In its center is the Fontana della Barcaccia, created by Pietro Bernini for Pope Urban III. Without a doubt, the combination of staircase, fountain and beautiful historical buildings will make for great photos!
9- Trastevere Neighborhood
