POMPEII

UNESCO Cultural Heritage, this ancient Roman city was completely covered by the ash rain of the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius, in the year 79 AD. The city was completely covered for about 1600 years and only in 1748 was it rediscovered. It fact that it was covered by mud and ash rain, and not directly by lava from the volcano, made the city incredibly preserved, including some bodies of residents of the city.

The archaeological site is really large and only part is open to public visitation, as many archeological works are still in progress. Most of the artifacts found in the city were transported to the museums of Naples, but some are still on display in this city, which was formerly a port of about 20,000 inhabitants and is now far from the coast of Campania.

Day Trips From Rome to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

Currently, Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visitors a year.

For two hours you will be transported to an ancient time. Visit amphitheaters, simple and other elegant residences, the Roman Forum, public buildings, cafeterias, baths, temples and even the brothel of the time. Really incredible!

Visitors get a map at the entrance and the streets of Pompeii are well structured and some are quite wide. The stones in the streets are smooth, irregular and slippery, so be careful. It is worth remembering that it is forbidden to touch the frescoes on the walls, so be very careful with bags and backpacks.

SORRENTO

The Amalfi Coast stands out for its rich natural beauties. UNESCO World Heritage Site has long been frequented by celebrities, millionaires and tourists from around the world. Its cliffs, the color of the sea and its houses in the mountains offer a scenario worthy of a movie. The Amalfi Coast has been frequented and worshiped in the “Tourism” mode, since the times of the Roman Empire.

Sorrento is the gateway to the famous Amalfi Coast and the simple fact of reaching the city, whether from the south or from Naples, is already an exuberant tour, with natural landscapes of rare beauty. It is an incredibly beautiful and dangerous winding road, constituting one of the most beautiful routes in the world, where Amalfi and Positano meet a short distance from Sorrento, not to mention that it is a starting point for the famous and internationally known Island from Capri.

Day Trips From Rome to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

The city, by itself, is beautiful, where the tourist has the opportunity to enjoy an excellent and colorful cuisine, given its production of citrus fruits and liqueurs, whose lemons are the highlight. Visiting Sorrento means getting lost in its narrow alleys, full of handicraft shops, cafes and colorful displays of the most varied items. This would already satisfy the tourist, but the city has much more to offer. It’s the second time I’ve been to Sorrento and it certainly won’t be the last, as I always leave wanting more.

Via San Cesareo

Via San Cesareo is one of the most popular, it is a noisy alley, its sounds mix with high-pitched voices, characteristic of the Italians, its color makes it seem that we are in a small Arab center, which revolves around the Sedile Dominova, which contains frescoes and coats of arms of the Sedile families, which is transformed at Christmas time and is admired by all Sorrentines. I wasn’t lucky enough to spend Christmas there.

Piazza Tasso

In the heart of the historic center we have Piazza Tasso, the main square of the city, it was created in honor of the most illustrious citizen of Sorrento, Torquato Tasso, where we also find the statue of Sant’Antonio Abate, patron saint of the city, where you reach Corso Italia , the long pedestrian street with boutiques, bars, ice cream parlors and crafts.

View of Villa Comunale gardens

But undoubtedly what most fascinates tourists is the coast where the buildings embedded in the rocks of the wall, contrast with the beauty of the Gulf of Naples, where the Mediterranean in turquoise blue color, gives a very special color to the whole.
Its beaches, with black sand and many stones, are used as best as possible, where many people sunbathe on wooden platforms of various shapes and sizes.

Marina Piccola view

Along the coast, the gardens of the Villa Comunale, Via Marina Grande, Via Marina Piccola¸ Via Marina di Puolo, the public beach of Sorrento and of course the wonderful view of the Amalfi Coast, which is the delight of amateur photographers like me.

Deep down to Vesuvius

The city is quiet and if you don’t mind going up and down, you can do everything on foot, which is recommended.
Among the main attractions we also have:

  • Gardens of the Villa Comunale
  • Dedicated to St Philip and James, dating from the 15th century in a romantic style, the side entrance being from 1474 in a Renaissance style.
  • Church Santa Maria de Carmine; rebuilt at the end of 500 on the basis of a church formerly dedicated to the Sorrentine Saints Martyrs.
  • Palazzo Correale, dating back to the 14th century, has an entrance with sloping arches, Catalan profiles and a beautiful window with an arched ogive resting on Gothic capitals, decorated with acanthus leaves. Its facade is characterized by Arabic architecture with Spanish-style arches and round windows.
  • Correale Museum of Terranova, a private foundation, presents works of art that over the centuries belonged to the Correale family of nobility and the last heirs, Alfredo and Pompéu.
  • Cloister and Church of San Francesco, 8th century monastery. The cloister is made up of crossed arches in the 14th century style and the other round arches over more recent octagonal columns. Inside there is a wooden crucifix donated by the Vulcano family in the 17th century.
