SORRENTO TOURS

Sorrento is very close to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and its archaeological sites and also the legendary island of Capri (charming!).

According to Greek legend, mythical mermaids lived in the city’s waters and sailors, enchanted by their song, were lured with their boats to ruin. Homer’s Ulysses only escaped because he tied himself to the ship’s mast and ordered his oarsmen to plug their ears with wax as they passed Sorrento.

You already liked the story, didn’t you? But don’t be scared by the mermaids… you won’t see any there! haha

The city is very quiet, ideal for walking, and there are very interesting things to see and do there. Starting by walking through the streets and feeling the city’s atmosphere, the aroma of lemon and orange trees – which are everywhere – and the delicious breeze that blows from the sea… but Sorrento doesn’t stop there.

The city’s restaurants offer tourists cuisine typical of the Mediterranean region, with dishes based on fish and seafood. A delight!

Despite being small, the city on the edge of the Bay of Naples has some pearls as attractions. So, let’s get to them!

1. Historic Center

The Historic Center of Sorrento is lovely and you can see everything on foot, as it is very small and full of charming alleys.

From 7:30 pm until midnight and on Sundays (in the morning only) cars are prohibited from driving through the city center streets. Therefore, walking along them is an excellent tip on what to do in Sorrento.

Also visit the Cathedral, where you can admire various works of art and the baptistry where the poet Torquato Tasso was baptized.

2. Piazza Tasso

Piazza Tasso was named in honor of the Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso, of whom the inhabitants are enormously proud. The square is truly the heart of the city of Sorrento.

Filled with bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, the square is excellent for relaxing, chatting, having lunch or a coffee and enjoying the city’s hustle and bustle.

Furthermore, in the immediate vicinity of the square, you will find historic buildings that are well worth a visit – such as the baroque church of Santa Maria del Carmine (in baroque style, built in the 16th century) and the Palazzo Correale (built in the 14th century, with a Gothic facade Catalan) – and also the sculpture of Torquato Tasso, the poet in whose honor the square was named.

Take advantage and also visit the Valley of the Mills (Il Vallone dei Mulini), which is behind Piazza Tasso: these are centuries-old ruins covered in vegetation. The view is beautiful! It’s worth taking a trip there!

3. Duomo Cathedral

Walking along Via Pietà from Piazza Tasso, you will pass two medieval palaces on the way to Duomo Cathedral.

The Cathedral has an impressive external fresco and a bell tower on three levels, as well as four classical columns and a majolica clock (a type of enamelware much appreciated in Italy since the Renaissance).

Opening hours: from 8am to 12:30pm and from 4:30pm to 8:30pm.

4. Church of San Francesco and Cloister of San Francesco in Sorrento

Founded in the 8th century, the building that today houses the Church of Saint Francis (San Francesco) has History – just like that, with a capital H. To begin with, it was founded by Saint Anthony himself, the patron saint of Sorrento, to be an oratory, and was only later transformed into a church, in the 16th century, by Franciscan friars.

Rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, the Church of San Francesco is full of art (including frescoes, statues and paintings, including from other parts of the world). Outside, you can see the statue of the Immaculate Virgin (it’s at the top of the building) and a beautiful wooden door from the 16th century.

Also visit the Cloister of Saint Francis (Chiostro di San Francesco), adjacent to the Church, still used as a residence for Franciscan monks. It’s beautiful, full of trees and ornamental plants that wrap around the stone pillars.

The Cloister has undergone many restorations over the centuries, so you can see a mix of architectural styles – with Renaissance, Arabic and Gothic influences.

5. Villa Comunale

Many people consider Villa Comunale to be the most beautiful place in Sorrento. I thought the whole city was beautiful! But, without a doubt, Villa Comunale is one of its main postcards.

It is close to the Church of San Francesco and the Cloister. In fact, it is a real promenade on the edge of the cliff where the city of Sorrento is located and, for this reason, one of the best viewpoints in the city.

From there, visitors have a privileged view of the Bay of Naples and the Vesuvius volcano. Wonderful place to relax, sit on a bench and enjoy the view… and, of course, to take lots of photos, because the landscape is beautiful and deserves to be captured!

Villa Comunale is also the descent point to reach the beach and the Port of Marina Piccola.
