ORVIETO
A responsible exploration of the region’s charms can start in Orvieto, a dreamlike town built on top of a volcanic plateau. The place has a beautiful cathedral, whose facade combines white marble carved in the Gothic style and golden Byzantine mosaics.
But even though the church gains in beauty, the most interesting construction in the village is the Pozzo di San Patrizio, commissioned by Pope Clement VII in 1527. His Holiness took refuge there during the sack of Rome and feared that the water supply was insufficient in case of a siege.
The result is a shaft 53 meters deep, with two spiral staircases that ingeniously do not intersect. And it is not by chance that Orvieto was chosen as a shelter. Since the 14th century, the city has been protected by the Fortezza dell’Albornoz, located on a rocky wall that provides beautiful views, and surrounded by a public park with some benches and grass, a nice place to have a snack – although the city has a handful fine restaurants to get started in local culinary traditions, such as Duca di Orvieto , which serves Orvietan cuisine from the 16th century.
CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO
Get ready for the impact, because the next point, Civita di Bagnoregio, a little stretch on the other side on the border with Lazio and mezzo known to Brazilians for being the setting for the soap opera Esperança, can be one of the most incredible places you will go see in life.
Surrounded by the Valle dei Calanchi, between sharp rock formations, the small village occupies the entire top of a hill – and is connected to the rest of the “land” only by a bridge. It is a vision of paradise. Founded by the Etruscans, it has lost area for centuries due to erosion and earthquakes. Of course, it lost its residents – today there are 20 self-sacrificing people there. As it can disappear from the map, it is nicknamed “città che muore”, or city that dies.
