Volterra + San Gimignano – 1 day

Our tour for this day in Tuscany is to visit the cities of San Gimignano and Volterra, destinations that can be visited in the same day and which is a popular option for a tour in the region. But, taking advantage of the proximity, we can also visit Abbadia de San Galgano, a beautiful attraction, which is really worth visiting. The cool thing about traveling around Tuscany is this… being able to increase your itinerary with new attractions, without being so attached to a ready-made schedule. Our tour schedule is initially dedicated to the Abbey of San Galgano, then we head to Volterra and end the day in San Giminiano.

Abbadia de San Galgano – Located about 33 km from the center of Siena, the great Abbadia de San Galgano was built between 1220 and 1268, in the classic cross style. With Gothic architecture, it is one of the most beautiful constructions of this type in Tuscany. Around the 15th century, the monks who lived there left the place due to famine and the plague. The Abbey was abandoned for a long time and today it is open to visitors and its ruins are well preserved, although without the roof. Close to the Abbey is also the Chapel of Montesiepi, where San Galgano allegedly struck a rock with his sword, which is now on display at the site.

Volterra

Located in the province of Pisa, Volterra is a city with just over 10,000 inhabitants, where you can see many locals and not just tourists. The settlement is of Etruscan origin and most of its buildings are dated between the 12th and 13th centuries. The small stone streets of the city are charming and along the alleys in the historic center there are many restaurants and gift shops, many of them selling wooden items. A very interesting fact that differentiates Volterra from other medieval cities in Tuscany is that in the city it is possible to admire large Roman ruins, as is the case of its Roman Theater.

In one of the medieval portals that lead to the old city, there is a panoramic point where you can get a sense of the region and take beautiful pictures of the characteristic landscape of Tuscany. The city is walled and among its main attractions are the Etruscan Guarnacci Museum, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo dei Priori (town hall), in addition to the Roman Theater from the 1st century BC and Roman cisterns, which are located in the beautiful Enrico Fiumi park.

Volterra is graceful, peaceful, has beautiful medieval walls and is a very pleasant place to spend the day.

San Gimignano

Well-known among tourists, San Gimignano is one of the most popular small towns in Tuscany. This medieval jewel, a UNESCO Heritage Site, is surrounded by walls and its main feature is the presence of its various towers. In the old days, building a tower signaled that the family had power and money, so there was a dispute between local families to build their towers ever larger and thus demonstrate their power. Given the number of towers present in the city, San Gimignano is known as the “medieval Manhattan”.

The towers of San Gimignano are beautiful and really worth a visit. Visit to the Civic Palace, a 12th-century building, where the Civic Museum is located, with rooms that are beautifully decorated inside and beautiful frescoes, as well as providing access to the Big Tower, one of the towers in San Gimignano that allows visitors!

Big Tower is 54 m high and is the tallest in the city — the view from up there is beautiful, the stone buildings contrast with the green of the rural area in an incredible way! It is also worth visiting the Collegiata, as it is called the city’s cathedral and which deserves a visit! Duomo Square, Cisterna Square and the Church of San Agostino are also worth a visit if you have time.

Although it has beautiful attractions, the coolest thing about San Gimignano is being able to walk around the narrow alleys, walk along its walls, admire the small shops selling artisanal products, taste a good cheese, sit in a restaurant and have a wine… or, of course, an ice cream! The city is known for having Gelateria Dondoli, already awarded with the best ice cream in the world! You can’t miss the opportunity to try it!
