St. Peter’s Square

After about 1.5 hours (depending on traffic) you will arrive at your first stop, St. Peter’s Square rebuilt and redesigned thanks to Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667.

The Basilica houses the Holy See, being the main religious temple of Catholicism and the church where the Pope performs the most important liturgies.

Its construction began in 1506 and ended in 1626, being consecrated on November 18 of that same year. Among the various architects who participated in the work, we could highlight Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno.

The Basilica is named after the first Pope in history, Saint Peter, whose body is buried there. Its has a capacity for 200,000 people, is 190 meters long and the central nave is 46 meters high. The dome reaches a height of 136 meters.

Among the works of art that can be found inside it are Bernini’s Baldaquino, Michelangelo’s La Pietà and the statue of Saint Peter on his throne.

This may be the best way to visit Rome while docked in Civitavecchia Port on a Day Trip to Eternal City

One of the most striking things about the Basilica is its incredible dome, which can be visited and allows for beautiful views of St. Peter’s Square and, if the day is clear, of much of Rome.

The only detail is that the climb is not suitable for everyone, as the last stretch is done via a steep and narrow spiral staircase.

Without a doubt, entering this temple is one of the unforgettable experiences in Rome.

Pantheon

You can continue tours from Civitavecchia Port to Rome, your visit to the second stop, the Pantheon.

Agrippa’s Pantheon, also known as the Pantheon of Rome, is one of the architectural masterpieces of the Italian capital. It is the best conservative building in ancient Rome.

The construction of the current Pantheon took place in the times of Hadrian, in the year 126 A.D. The name Agrippa was given because the place where the current building is built was previously occupied by the Pantheon of Agrippa, built in the year 27 B.C., which was destroyed due to a fire in 80 AD.

At the beginning of the 7th century it was donated to Pope Boniface IV and he transformed it into a church, which is why it is currently in a perfect state of conservation.

What is most surprising about the Pantheon’s architecture are its measurements: the circular building has exactly the same diameter as its height: 43.30 meters. The dome, with the same diameter, is larger than that of St. Peter’s Basilica. In the center of the dome, an oculus measuring 8.92 meters in diameter opens, allowing natural light to illuminate the entire building.

Piazza Navona

We will continue our tour through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions.

This square occupies the place where Domitian’s stadium (Agonal Circus) stood in the year 86, where Roman citizens watched Greek athletic games.

Endowed with a very elegant baroque style, it is one of the most beautiful and popular in Rome.

Surrounded by restaurants, its climate is very pleasant during the day. There, you can enjoy the performances of different street artists, such as magicians and dancers. But without a doubt, the biggest attraction of Piazza Navona are the three fountains built under the mandate of Gregorio XIII Boncompagni.

Fountain of the Four Rivers

In the center of Piazza Navona is the “Fountain of the Four Rivers”, built by Bernini in 1651. The four statues in the fountain represent the four most important rivers of the time: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges and the River Plate. In the center is the 16 meter high obelisk that belonged to the Circus Maximus, which was found on the Appian Way.

Del Moro

Created by Giacomo della Porta and perfected by Bernini, who later included dolphins, the Moorish Fountain was initially known as the “Snail Fountain”. This fountain is located in the south area of the square.

Fountain of Nettuno

Like the Fountain of the Moor, the Fountain of Neptune was created by Giacomo della Porta, but remained abandoned since its creation until 1873, when the work was completed by Zappalà and Della Bitta.

Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

This is one of the most visited churches in Rome.

The fresco painted in the apse by Andrea del Pozzo is one of its treasures. A very interesting three-dimensional effect can be observed, as the side columns depicted in the fresco are straight, but the ceiling where they were painted is curved.

Furthermore, it gives the impression that the church ceiling is much deeper and higher than it actually is.

The same artist also painted a false dome on the ceiling, as at the time the Jesuits had few financial resources to make a dome using traditional construction techniques.

Trevi Fountain

Spanish Steps

Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s La Barcaccia Fountain, continuing to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.
