Colosseum

After about 1.5 hours (depending on traffic) you will arrive at your first stop, Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), you will travel along the Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared the Second World War against France and Great Britain.

The Colosseum is the main symbol of Rome, an imposing building that, almost 2,000 years old, will take you back in time to discover what the ancient society of the Roman Empire was like.

Construction of the Colosseum began in 72 under Vespasian and ended in 80 under Emperor Titus. Emperor Titus opened the Colosseum with 100 days of games, which cost the lives of more than 2,000 gladiators. After construction was completed, the Colosseum became the largest Roman amphitheater, measuring 188 meters long, 156 meters wide and 57 meters high.

The Colosseum remained active for more than 500 years. The last games in history took place in the 6th century. Original name “Flavian Amphitheater” was replaced by Colosseum due to the large statue of Nero that stood at the entrance to the Domus Aurea, “The Colossus of Nero”.

Every day from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm.
Closed December 25th and January 1st.

Ticket: Combined entry to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine:

Roman Forum

This was the region where public and religious life took place in ancient Rome. The Forum is, together with the Colosseum, the greatest display of the grandeur of the Roman Empire that can be seen today.

At the end of the Empire, the Roman Forum was forgotten and little by little it was buried. Only in the 20th century were excavations carried out to bring this treasure to light.

Interesting points

In addition to the large number of temples in the forum (Saturn, Venus, Romulus, Vesta, etc.), it is worth paying attention to the following tourist attractions:

Via Sacra: It was the main street of ancient Rome and connected Piazza de Campidoglio with the Colosseum.

Arch of Titus: It is a triumphal arch that commemorates Rome’s victory over Jerusalem. It was built after the death of Emperor Titus.

Arch of Severus the Seventh: Arch erected in 203 AD to celebrate the third anniversary of Severus the Seventh as emperor.

Temple of Antoninus and Faustina: Built in the 2nd century, the temple stands out for being the best preserved in the Roman Forum.

Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine: Although it is mostly collapsed, its size gives reason to think that it was one of the most important buildings in the Roman Forum.

The Curia: The Senate met in this building to make administrative decisions about the Government of Rome.

Column of Phocas: Erected in 608 AD in honor of the Byzantine emperor, this more than 13 meter high column is one of the few that remained standing after it was built.

Piazza Venezia

National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II

The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, also known as Vittoriale, is an imposing building located in Piazza Venezia. It was opened in 1911 to honor Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy after unification. Inside are the Institute for the History of the Resurgence and the Central Museum of the Resurgence.

Since 1921, the Monument has housed the tomb of the unknown soldier, a place where the eternal flame shines and which is always guarded by two soldiers.

The monument was heavily criticized by the Italians, as it was necessary to tear down several buildings of great historical value to provide the space necessary for its construction. One of the biggest attractions of the Monument is the panoramic view from the terrace located at the height of the chariots. The panoramic elevators are the only way to access the top of the monument.

From 9:30 am to 7:30 pm (Last access at 6:45 pm)

Trevi Fountain

Soon after, Via del Corso, we will take you to the Trevi Fountain, by Nicola Salvi. The artist was responsible for building the fountain in the 18th century after winning a competition organized by Pope Clement XII.

The Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful fountain and also the largest in Rome, measuring 20 meters wide by 26 meters high. Its origins date back to 19 BC, a time when it constituted the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The Trevi Fountain was effectively completed in 1762, after several years of work promoted by Nicola Salvi and Giuseppe Pannini.

As a curiosity, Trevi’s name derives from Tre Vie (three ways), as the fountain was the meeting point of three streets. Another curious fact is that every visitor must throw a coin, backwards with their right hand over their left shoulder, towards the fountain. But do you know why?!

This myth was born with the film “The Fountain of Desires” in 1954, which says the following:

If you flip a coin: you will return to Rome.
Two coins: you will find love with a beautiful Italian woman (or Italian).
Three coins: you will marry the person you met.

Each year approximately one million euros are removed from the source. Since 2007, this money has been used for charitable purposes.

Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s La Barcaccia Fountain, continuing to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.

Pantheon

You can continue your Rome tours from cruise ship Port to the second stop, the Pantheon. Agrippa’s Pantheon, also known as the Pantheon of Rome, is one of the architectural masterpieces of the Italian capital. It is the best conservative building in ancient Rome.

The construction of the current Pantheon took place in the times of Hadrian, in the year 126 A.D. The name Agrippa was given because the place where the current building is built was previously occupied by the Pantheon of Agrippa, built in the year 27 B.C., which was destroyed due to a fire in 80 AD.

At the beginning of the 7th century it was donated to Pope Boniface IV and he transformed it into a church, which is why it is currently in a perfect state of conservation.

We will continue our tour through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Saint Agnes in Agony in Navona square. The stop you can’t miss is the St. Peter’s Square rebuilt and redesigned thanks to Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667.

The tour will end at 15:30 / 16:00, when we will return to the Port of Civitavecchia. You will be ready to board and continue your cruise around 5pm.
