Day Trip From Rome: Tarquinia, Etruschi Tour
The history of Tarquinia and the Etruscans
The Etruscan civilization is older than the Roman one. They were powerful, advanced and refined. They inhabited part of the Italy that we know today, had their own language, a rich culture and were assimilated by the Roman Republic in the 4th century BC. Tarchuna (the ancient name of Tarquinia) was one of the most important cities of this civilization: religious rituals and Roman ceremonies originated from there.
Around the 3rd century BC, it was at war with Rome and, after a few years of conflict, it was finally subjugated. In the Middle Ages, the ancient city became a fortified settlement, with towers and walls, with the name of Corneto. In 1922, as a tribute to the first Etruscan inhabitants and the first kings of these peoples, the name was changed to Tarquinia. Thousands of Etruscan tombs and many well-preserved artifacts were discovered in the surroundings of the city in the 19th century.
Most famous tourist attraction: the National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia and the Etruscan Necropolis. Considered the best Etruscan museum outside of Rome, this space is located in an old building, the Palazzo Vitelleschi, built between 1436 and 1439. Its three floors provide a better overview of the history, in chronological order, of the Etruscan tombs and sarcophagi in the region, the style and arts of these people, as well as several objects and tools so old that they date back to the Bronze Age. Designed pots imported from Egypt and Ancient Greece.
The museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but is closed on Mondays. Admission costs 6 euros for a full ticket. However, it is possible to buy a combined ticket to the museum and the necropolis for 8 euros.
The Etruscan Necropolis in Tarquinia
At first glance, when you arrive at the Necropolis, you may wonder what the hell this place is. You will see a large lawn with some strange little houses. Don’t be fooled, if you go down the stairs of each of these “little buildings” and press a button to turn on the light, you will find examples of the first Italian paintings. Tombs painted with care and very well preserved, some more than others, especially if we consider the ages of these paintings: they date from the 7th century to the 1st century BC. It may seem silly, but it is worth remembering that the “before Christ” count is done in descending order. Therefore, a painted tomb from the year 600 is 2,617 years old.
On the Monterozzi hill, on the outskirts of Tarquinia, there was a giant necropolis, with more than 6,000 underground tombs and their paintings that represent life at the time: hunters, fishermen, musicians, dancers, athletes, mythology, wealth, symbols of social status.
There are 20 tombs open for visits, but some of them were closed for renovation when I was there. Right at the entrance, there is a map that explains the history and photos of each one. Outside each little house there is also a plaque with more information about the tomb.
Oh, right at the entrance there is a series of stones arranged in an organized way: they are prehistoric urns, from the period 1000 BC.
The Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia is open from 8:30 am until sunset and is also closed on Mondays.
