Gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is an unforgettable summer destination. During the Roman Era, it was a popular haunt for the patricians (the aristocracy), like its neighbors Pompeii and Herculaneum.

In the 18th and 19th Centuries, Sorrento was an obligatory stop for gentlemen who made the Grand Tour of Italy, a kind of rite of passage or “post graduation” for those who wanted to be recognized as a man of the world at that time.

Going in and out of fashion over the centuries, Sorrento has maintained its look as an elegant seaside resort, but with a cozy vibe that captivates visitors from the moment they arrive. For starters, the landscape in Sorrento is fantastic. Located on top of a cliff facing the Gulf of Naples, the city has a spectacular view of Mount Vesuvius. And the historical heritage is also worth the trip.

The famous song Torna a Surriento, composed in Neapolitan language in 1902, suggests: “Vide ‘o mare de Surriento, che tesoro tene ‘nfunno/ Chi ha girato tutto ‘o mundo, nun l’ ha isto comm’ accà” (Look at the sea of Sorrento, how many treasures are at the bottom / Who has traveled all over the world, has never seen anything like the ones here”)

Church of Saint Francis

After the sea, the greatest charm I found in Sorrento was the Cloister of Saint Francis, from the 14th century.

The cloister is part of a beautiful medieval complex that is just a few steps from the promenade of the Villa Comunale and the best known attractions of Sorrento (all more or less linked to the memory of the Grand Tour of the 18th and 19th centuries and the elegant bohemia that characterized the city until the 60’s).

Before entering the cloister, visit the Church of Saint Francis, richly decorated in stucco and pietre dure mosaics (made in marble of different shades and very common in the Costiera region), also from the 14th century and built on an old oratory that would have been founded by Saint Antoninus, the patron saint of Sorrento, in the 7th century.

Cloister of Saint Francis

In the Cloister of Saint Francis reigns a peace that is not of our time

When I visited the cloister, I was absolutely alone and the silence and stillness were indescribable.

The Cloister of Saint Francis is neither large nor spectacular. Its great charms are its simplicity and the happy combination of different architectural elements (not least because most of the elements used in its construction were plundered from Greek, Roman and Etruscan ruins).

But the calm I found there is only possible in the low season months, as the place is used for exhibitions, concerts and social events, during the summer.

Also part of the architectural complex of Saint Francis is the building where the Franciscan monastery used to be, today the seat of the Istituto Statale d’Arte.

Historic Center

The Historic Center of Sorrento is generous with viewpoints overlooking the sea ⭐ Heart of the Historic Center of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso, the city’s tribute to one of its most illustrious sons, the poet Torquato Tasso (16th century), author of Jerusalem Liberated, an epic about the Crusades.

The square dates back to the 19th century and is surrounded by old mansions, many of which have been converted into hotels.

Piazza Tasso, heart of Sorrento

This main square in Sorrento is a great place to people-watch, admire Baroque architecture and learn about the local history. A large open space surrounded by restaurants, sidewalk cafes and pastel buildings more than once during your visit to this resort town.

An intense road artery, where cars and motorcycles pass alongside pedestrians on their way to work or school. Countless statues, like the one of Torquato Tasso, who gives the name to the square, on a corner. The Renaissance poet born in Sorrento in the 16th century has been highly praised for centuries. In the center of the square is the sculpture of Santo Antônio, the patron saint of the city.

The cobbled streets and narrow lanes leading off the square include Via San Cesareo, the city’s main shopping street, a good place to pick up souvenirs. To rest your feet, take a seat at one of the bars in the square or nearby and enjoy a steaming espresso or ice cream.

Built in 1866, Piazza Tasso is surrounded by historic buildings. Visit the baroque church of Santa Maria de Carmine, an eye-catching building with a white and yellow stucco facade. After descending through the church’s nave and studying the frescoes, stained glass and dome, make your way to the line of flag poles and look down. Piazza Tasso is built on a deep ravine that crosses the center of the city. From here, you can see the huge abyss.
