The Eternal City breathes history. There are so many interesting places to visit that it is difficult to choose the best activities in Rome. At every corner there is a surprise, a ruin, a monument to leave you speechless. It’s really worth securing your spot in advance, as demand is constant throughout the year! Check out our selection of the best tours in Rome and plan your trip!

Vatican, Basilica and St. Peter’s Square tour

St. Peter’s Basilica is the most impressive church you will ever see. With a dome measuring 42 meters in diameter (designed by none other than Michelangelo) and which, together with the structure of the building, reaches a height of 138 meters, the opulence of the basilica is almost indescribable, and works of art such as the Madonna by Michelangelo himself. During the tour, you can climb up to the dome and enjoy the view of St. Peter’s Square, and also see the tombs of the popes, which are located in the underground part of the structure.

Day Trip in Rome Italy

St. Peter’s Square, which faces the Basilica, is monumental, and has in its center an Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula!

Colosseum

Out of all the impressive buildings in Rome, the Colosseum is the most amazing. Highly well preserved – considering it is a structure that is over 2000 years old – this landmark delights the millions of tourists who visit it every year and is one of the best tours in Rome! The place exudes history, and if you liked this subject (or even just Hollywood movies) you will get goosebumps when you see the monument. One of the best views you can have of the Colosseum is from the hill that is just opposite, on the other side of the avenue. Be sure to go there to make the best photos!

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is at the end of the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct built in the 19th century BC, which carries water from a natural source, located 20 kilometers from Rome. Hearing the sound of the water when approaching the source gives a very special feeling, and the size and beauty of the place will leave you speechless! Be sure to throw a coin over your left shoulder (if you want to return to Rome) or four coins (if you want to return to Rome with someone) into the fountain. It really works! 🙂 One of the most magical Rome tours there is!

Day Trip in Rome Italy

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum was the pulsating center of Imperial Rome. It was there where Roman elections took place, and where the powerful senate met. The Forum sometimes looks like a disorganized collection of ruins, but with a little imagination, you can delve into the history of the place, and imagine what the daily life of the Romans was like. The arches are the best-preserved structures, and put on a show as well as the temples of Romulus and Antoninus. For the best view of Ancient Rome, climb the Farnese Gardens, the white structure seen from most of the Forum, atop Palatine Hill.

Pantheon

Erected over 1,800 years ago, the Pantheon is magical, certainly one of the most imposing and impressive structures in Rome. The building was built to be a temple of worship to pagan gods, and has a circular opening in the ceiling, the oculus, which was the only source of illumination, and which allowed observation of the sky. The mysteries of the Pantheon’s construction were only recently revealed, and its 43 meter diameter dome remained the largest dome in the world for over a millennium!

Day Trip in Rome Italy

Definitely one of the best attractions and one of the most beautiful sights in Rome!

Entrance to the Pantheon is free, as it was converted into a church in the 5th century. In the square in front of the building there are several cafes and restaurants, which are perfect for a quick drink or a meal admiring the structure and movement. of people.

Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese

Piazza del Popolo is a vast square, close to the River Tiber, and a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Vatican. In the center of the square, there is an original Egyptian obelisk, brought by Emperor Augustus in 10 BC. (Including the Mausoleum of Augustus is just under 5 minutes walking from there). Be sure to walk to Pincio square, which is up the hill at the end of the square (above the marble monuments – you can easily see the lookout point and the people up there). The view from there is simply phenomenal, especially at sunset. Pincio square is at the beginning of Villa Borghese, Rome’s most famous park.

Visit to Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo, on the banks of the Tiber River, and just a few minutes from St. Peter’s Basilica, is yet another tour in Rome that you cannot miss. Built by Emperor Hadrian in 123 AD. to be his mausoleum, the building was turned into a fortress, and even a papal residence. Nowadays, the monument houses a national museum.

Don’t miss this one of the must-see tourist attractions in Rome! For the best views of Castel Sant’Angelo, walk across the bridge across the river. If you have time, go down the stairs that lead to the bank of the River Tiber on the castle side, and enjoy a drink with phenomenal views, on the water side. There are several bars and restaurants around, great places to relax after walking around the Vatican.

Day Trip in Rome Italy

Palazzo Vittorio Emanuele

Built in 1861 as a symbol of the unification of Italy, the Vittorio Emanuelle Palace is a vast building, all in white marble. Despite not being considered by the Romans one of the most beautiful buildings in the city (having earned nicknames such as “typing machine”), the palace is worth a visit, as the view from the top of its stairs is beautiful, and, inside, you can visit the Central Museum of the Risorgimento, which is spectacular.

There is also an elevator that was recently installed to take tourists to the top of the palace, offering phenomenal views across Rome. If you don’t want to wait in line to go up the elevator, you’ll be able to take great pictures from the top of the palace too, as the view is beautiful!

Stroll around Piazza Navona

By far one of the most impressive squares in Rome, Piazza Navona was built on the site of an ancient Roman stadium, and is home to a huge collection of beautiful buildings, fountains and even a beautiful Egyptian obelisk. With several examples of Roman Baroque architecture, the piazza is part of the beating heart of the city, and is one of the main tours and sights in Rome. On any day of the week, it is possible to find hundreds of people enjoying the phenomenal views and relaxed atmosphere of the square, where street artists perform.

In Piazza Navona you will also find several bars and restaurants, such as Vacanze Romane, which has super friendly waiters, and where you can enjoy a drink or a meal while enjoying one of the most beautiful views and one of the best tours in Rome (free).
