Highway to the ruins of Pompeii
Start with a scenic drive along the Autostrada del Sol or the highway of the sun, passing lemon groves and idyllic towns. Upon arrival in Pompeii, discover the wonders of Roman civilization in the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The 2,000-year-old city is shrouded in volcanic ash that has contributed to its preservation, and intriguing sites like Vila dos Mistérios have walls covered in frescoes depicting ancient tales. One is of a girl being mysteriously inducted into an ancient cult.
Pompeii was a walled city and right after passing through the turnstile at the entrance to the archaeological park and starting the tour you go through Porta Marina, one of the many portals that took people into this city, and going straight ahead you will arrive at what used to be the main square of the city, where the Foro (Forum) and the Basilica were located.
Basilica of Pompeii
And it is in this square that today various utensils (such as jars, vases, amphorae, chests, among others) are on display, as well as some bodies that were found during excavations and studies in the area, completely untouched. You can see that the eruption was sudden and many didn’t have time to run and take cover.
Amphitheater of Pompei
Another point that was very important in the city is the Amphitheater of Pompei, where gladiator fights and combats with ferocious animals took place. The Amphitheater is one of the furthest points in the ruins. The most interesting thing is that, unlike the Coliseum in Rome, where you enter through the stands and have a view of the arena, here you have the opposite view, imagining the pressure that the gladiators suffered from the public.
Amphitheater of Pompei
Another point that is quite interesting is the Casa del Fauno (House of the Faun), which was the largest private house in the city of Pompeii, named after a small sculpture in its central square. There is still a garden there, with flowering trees, which gives an air of life after the catastrophe that was the eruption.
There were several spas in the city with cold, warm and hot baths, as well as brothels, such as the one in the image below, a place that was being restored to recover the paintings on the walls.
Spa in Pompeii
It is very interesting to walk through its small streets and get lost. Discovering and imagining what life was like in this city. There is always something new and interesting to see.
Coastal beauty at its best
Your tour continues along the stunning Amalfi Coast towards Sorrento, passing panoramas of the blue sea. Enjoy some free time to wander the charming streets, taste local delicacies such as creamy gelato or refreshing limoncello, and marvel at the awe-inspiring views of the Bay of Naples and the enchanting island of Capri. As the day draws to a close, we’ll drive back to Rome, retaining the memories of your journey through the picturesque treasures of Pompeii and Sorrento.
Sorrento is a charming city on the Italian coast that can be the ideal destination for anyone looking for something to visit on the Amalfi Coast.
Home to just over 16 thousand inhabitants, the city has already been immortalized in the works of great erudite artists, such as Byron, Goethe and Wagner, and it is not difficult to understand the reasons.
The destination is on a large cliff overlooking the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, where narrow alleys cut through the landscape amid lush vegetation.
To complete, the city has a privileged location, with easy access to the attractions of the Amalfi Coast, the trendy island of Capri and the beauties of the Campaign region.
Before packing your suitcase to embark on this unforgettable trip, however, you cannot forget to do a good planning, and we will help you in this task!
