Best Day Trips From Rome to Tuscany

FLORENCE

We started exploring the city in the center, the architecture of the Florence Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore, with free admission (and usually long queues). The cathedral is part of a “complex” of 5 attractions, which are paid for, among which are its dome, which at the time of construction was innovative, the baptistery right in front of the cathedral in front of you and the tower from the clock, with a beautiful view. Among all the attractions of the Cathedral complex of Santa Maria del Fiori, the dome is very interesting.

Visit the Santa Maria Novella Basilica, the Central Market, great for eating the most varied dishes, and walk through the central region of Florence passing by points such as Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio, an important postcard of the Tuscan capital. Galleria degli Uffizi, the main museum in the city and one of the main museums in all of Europe. Take a walk, go to the Boboli Gardens or choose to go to Palazzo Pitti or Galleria dell’Accademia, where Michelangelo’s David is. In the late afternoon, we’ll go to Piazzale Michelangelo, from where you’ll see the most famous sunset in Florence.

SIENA

Siena is one of the most important cities in Tuscany and disputed with Florence the monopoly of this region. With its Gothic style buildings, it is not a simple village like others that you visit along the tours and offers an excellent structure. According to legend, Siena was founded by the sons of Reno and during the months of July and August it hosts the traditional Pallium of Siena, the oldest horse race in the world.

It starts at Piazza del Campo where the main attractions of Siena are located. The square itself, which is inclined, is where the great Pallium of Siena takes place and a meeting point in the city. In this square are Gaia, a fountain decorated with sculptures, the Palazzo Comunale, built in the 13th century, the Civic Museum and the Torre del Mangia, a medieval tower built from 1338 and which today can be accessed through its stairs. The ascent to Torre del Mangia is around 102 meters high and access to its upper part is via very tight stairs, but which at the top offer a sensational view — if you like panoramic views, it is well worth it visit, although the ascent is not easy.

The Civic Museum, which is next to the Tower, has beautiful frescoes and beautifully decorated rooms. As a bonus, the museum also has a balcony, with a beautiful view of the city! After strolling around Piazza del Campo, we stopped for lunch at the nearby Taverna di San Giuseppe.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Duomo of Siena, built in green, pink and white marble. The majestic construction has rich details, including on the floor, where more than 50 murals of biblical images are located, built over 2 centuries. Also noteworthy inside the Duomo are its huge pilasters in black and white, its dome and Libreria Piccolomini, with frescoes on the ceiling and huge books by Pope Pius II.

Visit to Fortezza Medicea, an ancient fortress that is now a park where city residents practice physical activities and meet to talk. The place is simple, but the construction is very interesting.

An interesting cultural and historical attraction, the Baptistery of San Giovani, the crypt and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which brings together works that adorned the Duomo of Siena. Siena is also home to the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex and the Pinacoteca Nacional.

MONTERIGGIONI

At the end of the afternoon, we’ll head to Monteriggioni, a very friendly village that’s easy to explore on foot. In 5 minutes you can cross the citadel, it is so small. An hour or a little more is enough to get to know the place, since there is not much to do there. The main attraction of Monteriggioni is really getting to know its alleys, stone buildings and architecture.

The castle of Monteriggioni was built during the second century of the Republic of Siena to serve as a strategic defense site and prevent the expansion of Florence. As Florence and Siena were rival cities, many battles between the two were fought over the centuries. Monteriggioni is part of the so-called Via Francigena, a pilgrimage route from the Middle Ages, which ran from France to Rome and in the Tuscany region passes through cities such as San Giminignano and San Quirico d’Orcia.

The castle is surrounded by walls, high towers and beautiful portals — this architectural set of walls, which are actually defense mechanisms, is the main attraction of the place. And, to make the tour even more interesting, you can climb these walls and walk through part of them — the view is beautiful!

The main entrance to the borgo is Porta Franca and once inside you can visit the church of Santa Maria Assunta and the small museum of weapons in the city – it is a simple place, but it can be fun for children, since it is possible to play and try out medieval items, for example.
