Discovering the Majesty of Ancient Rome: An Unmissable Itinerary
Once you’ve settled comfortably into your hotel, get ready to travel back in time and explore the wonders of Ancient Rome. This area of the city is home to some of the most iconic and impressive monuments in the history of Western civilization.
Immerse yourself in Ancient History and Architecture
Prepare to marvel at the buildings that witnessed the height of the Roman Empire:
Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore
One of Rome’s four papal basilicas, with a rich history and impressive mosaics and architecture.
Highlights:
- Admire the famous Snow Mosaic that represents the miracle of the snowfall of August 5, 358, the first known example of snow in the history of art.
- Discover the famous spiral staircase designed by the genius Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
- Visit the precious Nativity scene created by Arnolfo di Cambio, a symbol of the artistic and religious tradition of the Basilica.
- Explore the Loggia delle Benedizioni, a panoramic area from which you can admire the facade of the Basilica and the square below, a symbolic place for the most important liturgical celebrations.
Rise of the Borgias
A historic street that leads to important monuments and offers interesting views of the city.
Not far from Via Cavour, there is this delightful place. Here the ivy covers a large part of the building with medieval, Renaissance and sixteenth-century architectural features. Silence envelops the square, probably thanks to the high walls that isolate the interior from traffic and chaos. A delightful balcony was built immediately above the arch. Popular tradition calls it the Balcony of Vannozza.
It is said that here, for a long time, lived the lover of Alexander VI with the three illegitimate children of the pope. The staircase is also linked to a legend of ancient Rome. The place, called at the time “Vicus Sceleratus”, was the stage of the death of Servius Tullius. Here, his daughter Tullia passed with her chariot over her father’s corpse.
Church of San Pietro in Vincoli
Famous for housing Michelangelo’s magnificent sculpture of Moses, as well as the chains that supposedly imprisoned St. Peter.
Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli stands on what in ancient Rome was called Fagutal, one of the three hills that made up the Esquiline Hill, overlooking the Suburra valley. The building was rebuilt in 442 on a previous basilica dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Initially known as the “Eudoxian” basilica from the name of the patron Licinia Eudoxia, wife of Valentinian III and daughter of Theodosius II, it was later dedicated to San Pietro in Vincoli with particular reference to the chains (in Latin vincula) used to imprison Saint Peter in Jerusalem and in the Mamertine prison in Rome, still kept today as relics inside the church itself.
Church was the subject of numerous restorations, the most important of which was carried out in 1503 by Julius II, who is responsible for the current architectural layout of the basilica, with its entrance portico and the adjoining convent with cloister attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo and today occupied by the Faculty of Engineering of La Sapienza University. The building houses one of the most important marble complexes of the Italian Renaissance: the sepulchral monument to Julius II created by Michelangelo Buonarroti and containing the very famous and imposing statue of Moses.

The work was created by the Florentine artist on commission from Julius II who in 1505 asked him to create his own sepulchral monument. Michelangelo’s project, which in the initial sketch envisaged a rectangular mausoleum with more than forty statues inside, was gradually scaled down to reach the current final version (1545): a monument leaning against the part containing 7 statues of which only 3 are by Michelangelo.
