SORRENTO TOURS

Influenced over the centuries by the Greeks, Romans, Normans and Aragonese, all the peoples who have succeeded one another in the domination of Sorrento have left tangible evidence of their passage. Among the colors and scents of the sea, the thousand steps and the lush vegetation, it is in fact possible to admire important monuments and archaeological sites, which give tourists the possibility of choosing between history, culture, beach, relaxation and good food.

Piazza Tasso

The “rhythm” of Sorrento, the beating heart of the city. Bars, restaurants, shops and lots and lots of people practically all year round. At Christmas, the crowds are really huge, because Sorrento is much more than a seaside resort. The only discordant note are the cars that cross the city center even if, it must be said, we are very far from the traffic of other urban areas.

Villa Comunale

Five Star Panorama for the Villa Comunale in Sorrento a stone’s throw from Piazza Tasso. Small, tidy, intimate, with a breathtaking sea view and the exclusive possibility of reaching Marina Piccola via a convenient elevator. In the summer, the Marina is the port of connection with Capri, Ischia and Procida.

Cloister of San Francesco

Practically attached to the Villa Comunale, the Cloister of San Francesco is a must-see in Sorrento. It is part of the church of the same name although, unlike the latter, it has retained several traces of the original fourteenth-century architecture along with other decorative motifs added in the following centuries. Porticoes of crossed tuff arches that alternate with round arches in turn resting on columns surmounted by capitals. A mix of styles that does not leave you indifferent and that, above all, gives the cloister a solemn and mystical atmosphere.

Vallone dei Mulini

Many argue that abandonment is the most authentic form of conservation of beauty. Hence also the charm of the Vallone dei Mulini or, to put it in English (the English and Americans are regular visitors to Sorrento) “Deep Valley of the Mills”. It is a natural riverbed that once reached the sea where, in the seventeenth century, the Correale family (the valley had previously been owned by the Tasso family) built a mill for grinding wheat. The mill was powered by rainwater that swelled in the canal.

Activity continued until the beginning of the 20th century and has since been abandoned. The result is that thick vegetation has taken over the area, almost completely covering the traces of the activities that took place there (there was also a sawmill, a tuff quarry and several caves used as cisterns for collecting rainwater). All in the historic center of Sorrento. The valley is inaccessible and so you have to be content with photographing the ruins.

Cathedral

Originally located outside the city walls, the Cathedral of Saints Philip and James has been in the historic center of Sorrento for over a thousand years, although, it must be said, it previously stood further upstream than its current location. Almost nothing remains of the original appearance and the current form is the result of successive renovations completed in the 1920s with the neo-Gothic facade. The interior is in Baroque style, mostly built in the 18th century.

As for the works of art, there are some of great value: from the canvases, made by Giacomo del Pò, depicting the Assumption and Saints Philip and James (on the ceiling of the Presbytery), to the “Madonna with Child and the two Saints John” by Silvestro Buono (on the pulpit). Also impressive are the wooden choir (in the Presbytery) and the large organ that overlooks the main entrance portal. Outside, on Corso Italia, the bell tower with the 18th-century ceramic clock. Majestic.

Sedile Dominova in via San Cesareo

From nobility to the proletariat. From a meeting place for the Sorrento nobility, or rather a part of it, to a Mutual Aid Workers’ Society, a form of associationism that was very widespread in the 19th century. But let’s proceed in order. The Sedil Dominova (from the Latin “Domus Nova”) was built in the 14th century following the fratricidal struggles between the patrician families of the city. Struggles that left a long trail of blood and for which the decisive intervention of the then bishop was necessary.

Hence the choice to create a monumental building in which only the nobles of the western part of Sorrento would meet, while the other families would continue to do so in the old Sedile di Porta, at the beginning of Corso Italia. In 1877, when the Società Operaia was founded, the Sedil Dominova was used as the headquarters of the Sorrento workers’ association. A form of mutualism, widespread in many parts of Italy, through which the workers were able to protect themselves in the event of accidents and illnesses. A plaque still commemorates the company that has had so much merit in improving the living conditions of the people of Sorrento. The fresco with the city’s coat of arms is also beautiful.
