First day in Tuscany

As we already mentioned in the article, Tuscany is full of tourist cities, but our tip is that you divide your time well to get to know three of them: Pisa, Florence and San Gimignano. For your first day, we suggest you take a quick tour of Pisa to see one of the most famous monuments in Italy and then take a train to Florence.

In Pisa, head to Piazza dei Miracoli, known as Piazza del Duomo, which contains one of Europe’s most popular towers, an important collection of medieval art and some of Italy’s holiest sites, such as the Catedral di Santa Maria Assunta. All made of marble, this construction draws a lot of attention from tourists. Its interior has raised panels depicting scenes from the Bible and an eight-sided pulpit by Giovanni Pisano that is the finest example of Italian Gothic sculpture of all time.

In Piazza del Duomo is also located the biggest symbol of the city, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is with her in the background that tourists usually take pictures making funny and creative poses. It is possible to climb 300 steps to the top of the tower to have a beautiful view of the city, but the entrance is paid and costs 18 euros. Up there are 7 bells, one for each musical note. In addition, on site you can still visit the Baptistery of San Giovanni, which is the largest in Europe; the Camposanto monumental cemetery and the Museo delle Sinopie. After spending the afternoon exploring the square, the tip is that you stop at a restaurant in the region for a meal accompanied by a good, traditional glass of wine.

Second day of travel in Tuscany

Start your day in Florence early to make the most of what little time you have in the city. Your first stop will be at Ponte Vecchio, which is on the famous Arno River. Spared by the bombs dropped by the Nazis in World War II, it is one of Florence’s main symbols and a meeting point for tourists and locals alike. In addition to the shops that extend along it and the beautiful landscape that you can see from there, several street artists perform daily and give an even greater charm to the place. Around it are several buildings dating from the 16th century.

After that, be sure to go to Piazza del Duomo, one of the most visited in the country. Here you will discover Florence Cathedral, which has a bell tower by Giotto. It is possible to climb its 414 steps and have a breathtaking view of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. In this square, it is also possible to visit the Baptistery of Saint John, one of the oldest buildings in the city, and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which houses the works of the Santa Maria del Fiore Basilica and a magnificent collection of sculptures by artists such as Donatello. After enjoying all these attractions, relax and have lunch at one of the many restaurants that are dotted around the area.

To end your day, go watch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo. It is located in a higher part of the city and a little away from the tourist center, but it offers an incredible view of Florence and its main sights, especially in the late afternoon.

Third day of travel in Tuscany

For your third and final day of travel in Tuscany, we suggest that you get up very early and take a bus to a town near Florence called San Gimignano. The journey between the two cities takes about 2 hours. San Gimignano is quite small, so it is possible to see the main attractions of the city, which is very charming, in just one day. Once there, start your itinerary with a tour of the historic center and be sure to visit Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo.

In Piazza della Cisterna, you will find Gelateria Dondoli, winner of the best ice cream in the world in 2006/2007 and 2008/2009. Very close to it is the Piazza del Duomo, which houses the city’s Cathedral. Made of reddish-toned stones, it has beautiful images of saints and angels inside. From this square it is possible to see important buildings in the city, such as the Palazzo del Podestà

Right next to the Cathedral, you will see the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre Grossa, both form a building. The tip is that you set aside a little time to get to know this monument. Palazzo Publico is the seat of the City Hall and houses the Museo Cívico, which houses many works by local and Tuscan artists. Ideal to end your day with a flourish, the Torre Grossa provides a beautiful view of the city to visitors who climb to its top.
