PISA

Visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa is very easy: it’s a trip that fits in a morning or afternoon for anyone staying in Rome. Visiting the tower outside is free — but if you want (and buy a ticket in advance), you can even enter and climb the Tower.

Entering and climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa adds a fun component to the tour. It’s not mandatory, of course. Go up only if you want to experience a slight dizziness climbing the inclined spiral — and also enjoy the privilege of penetrating one of the most famous monuments on the planet.

Places are limited. Only 30 visitors are admitted to the tower at one time. Therefore, tickets are sold by appointment. If you miss your time, you won’t go up.

Tickets to go up by appointment are sold for €20. Tickets enter the system 20 days in advance and can be purchased up until the day before the date, if available.

Book a driver in advance & we’ll pick you up at your doorstep

With your Tower ticket in hand, you must go half an hour in advance to the left-luggage office to leave your bags or backpacks. From there you queue up at the Tower. If you miss your appointment, you’ll be fine. Each group has 30 minutes to go up and down. There are 215 spiral steps — in a building with a steep slope. It takes breath and resistance to dizziness.

Is climbing essential? Of course. It’s just for the fetish of climbing on a postcard (and experiencing the sensation of walking on a tilted building). It is worth remembering that, as is the case in other monuments of this kind, the top of the Tower of Pisa is the only point in the Square of Miracles from where you cannot see the Tower of Pisa.

Even if you don’t want to/can’t/didn’t find a ticket to go up to the Tower, the trip there is totally worth it. Not just because of the leaning tower: Piazza dei Miracoli as a whole is of Taj-Mahalian beauty; live, the Tower’s inclination stops being an encyclopedia curiosity and becomes the detail that makes the set even more captivating. What classical architect would think of such a disconcerting asymmetry? Take it from me: the Leaning Tower of Pisa is not a tourist trap, no.

The tour becomes richer when you explore the Tower of Pisa’s neighbors.

Amazing day trips from Rome by private car

The visit to the Cathedral, during free time, is included in the ticket to climb the Tower or to one of the other attractions. Even if you don’t buy any tickets, you can still visit the Cathedral. Just stop by the box office and pick up a free ticket (by appointment).

The Baptistery, the Camposanto (Cemetery) and the Museu delle Sinopie (which displays the drafts of the frescoes destroyed in a Camposanto fire) can be visited with a single or joint ticket. One attraction costs 7 euros; all attractions (not including the Leaning Tower of Pisa), 10 euros. Buy online or at the ticket office on site.

Piazza dei Miracoli — “Square of Miracles”, a term coined by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio — is strangely outside the ‘central’ historic center of Pisa.

In Pisa’s heyday as one of the Italian Maritime Republics, between the 12th and 14th centuries, the city’s most important river port was in those parts, more or less where the Pisa San Rossore station is today.

But the river (which was called Auser) dried up, and the city ended up relocating along the Arno, further on. This alone saved the square from being in the center of a labyrinth of alleys, as is common in Italian cities.
