Surrounded by green meadows and unique views, Tolfa is a small town in the hills of Etruria, not far from Civitavecchia. A country rich in history, where you can breathe fresh air and eat well.
But be careful, this is not just a simple visit to Tolfa, but a real experience that will leave you pleasantly surprised!
THE HISTORIC CENTER OF TOLFA
Very characteristic. A collection of truly unique alleys and squares, with breathtaking views! We recommend starting in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, also known as Piazza Nuova. From this point, thanks to a large balcony, you can admire a good part of the Tolfa landscape and, on clear days, you can see Rome and the Apennines. The square is also home to the Palazzo Comunale and the beautiful Villa Comunale. Before taking Via Roma, on your right, you can admire the Monument to the Fallen.
After walking along Via Roma, you reach Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, known as Piazza Vecchia, continuing on to Via Frangipani, at number 12 is the former Palazzo dei Priori, today Palazzaccio, dominated by the Clock Tower. Following the outer walls of medieval Tolfa, you pass under the arch of the Palazzo della Ragione. Until you reach the Rocca di Tolfa. Going down, you arrive in front of the Collegiate Church of S. Egidio and then the Oratory of the Crucifix.
At the top of the road, however, is the Capuchin Convent. At the end of Via Annibal Caro you can visit the Church of the Madonna della Sughera with the adjacent convent of the Augustinian Fathers. Then you go down Viale D’Italia and find yourself back at the starting point.
TOLFA CULTURAL CENTER
Another must-see if you want to visit Tolfa is the Cultural Center, which includes the Civic Archaeological Museum of Tolfa, the Municipal Library and the Municipal Historical Archive “Giuseppe Cola”.
Initially, the site where the Cultural Center is located today was the headquarters of the convent of the Augustinian Fathers attached to the Sanctuary of S. Maria della Sughera. Construction began at the time when Agostino Chigi was the contractor for the alum mines, in 1500, when there was a miraculous apparition of the Virgin and Child near a cork oak tree.
The name of the architect who designed the sanctuary is still unknown today. Some scholars believe that it could be Baldassarre Peruzzi or Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.
In 1552, a crime was committed in the church, which prohibited worship and closed it for a short period. When it was reopened, cracks began to appear inside the chapel, so the Municipality of Tolfa decided to expand and rebuild the church in its current form.

The church and convent maintained their appearance unchanged until 1799, when the French militia looted the sanctuary. They were subsequently restored between 1801 and 1825, but the convent gradually lost importance until it hosted military troops during the Second World War. It later became the site of a brick factory and finally a blacksmith’s workshop, until restoration work began in 1997 and its transformation into the current Cultural Center.
Inside the museum you can admire finds of Etruscan, Roman, medieval and modern origin. Specifically:
In the Etruscan section: funerary goods from the main necropolises in the region.
In the Roman section: a selection of materials from the Roman villas in the region (villa di Pian dei Santi, villa di Poggio Smerdarolo), including in particular table and cup ceramics, decorated stucco and plaster, patterned bricks.
Medieval and modern section: materials from the Abbey of Piantangeli, including some fragments of ceramics and, above all, sculptural finds with allegorical representations, coming from the abbey church.
Finally, a part of the exhibition is dedicated to the period of the discovery of alum.
THE CAPUCHIN CONVENT
A must-see is the Capuchin Convent.
Built in the 17th century, in 1621 to be precise, the Convent of the Capuchin Friars of Tolfa was designed by the papal architect Fra Michele da Bergamo and built thanks to the financial support from the revenues of the flourishing Alunit mines, at the time owned by the Reverend Camera Apostolica.
A unique place where you can stay in completely renovated rooms that still retain the essence of 17th-century cells. You can also admire the beautiful panorama from the spectacular terrace and enjoy a pleasant read inside the library.
THE FORTRESS OF TOLFA
The path to the Rocca di Tolfa at the top of the hill, which is completely uphill, is particularly evocative. Through the narrow streets of the old village of Tolfa, you can reach the summit peacefully, surrounded by the beautiful gardens of the surrounding houses.
Initially designed as a medieval castle, over time, thanks to its dominant position, the Rocca took on the role of a control tower and shooting range, and even housed a small cemetery during the 19th century.
It even managed to protect the people from Napoleon’s army. In fact, it resisted the French invasion in 1798, representing the last defensive bastion until March 14, 1799, when it was finally destroyed, along with most of the medieval houses in the town. Trapped in the ruins of the ancient castle, the Tolfa people who rebelled against the French invaders were called brigands.
Near the castle, you can also admire the small church of the Madonna della Rocca, built with the aim of protecting the Tolfa people from above. It represents one of the most important symbols of Tolfa.
Between the church and the castle there is a small path, now overgrown with weeds, which leads to a plateau from where it is said that one can “see all the way to the afterlife”.
THE ABBEY OF PIANTANGELI
If, however, you also want to do a short excursion, a simple hiking route, we recommend visiting the ruins of the Abbey of Pietrangeli.
The Abbey of Pietrangeli is located in the heart of the Tolfa Mountains. This is an ancient and little-known but truly evocative place that is worth visiting. Once there, you will also be able to admire a splendid view of the Mignone Valley.
Ruins can be reached by a short and easy path (about an hour’s walk) that starts in Tolfa and ends at the “Grasceta dei Cavallari”, an ancient Etruscan-Roman temple.
Pietrangeli Abbey was founded in the Carolingian era in a dominant position overlooking the Mignone Valley.
The remains of the church are the ruins of a building with three naves, apses with three bays and four central and lateral columns. Outside are the remains of a square bell tower. A small village was built near the abbey, inhabited until the 14th century, but abandoned in circumstances that are not fully understood, perhaps due to the great plague that ravaged Europe in the mid-14th century.
HISTORIC BUILDING IN TOLFA
Two historic buildings in Tolfa, dating back to the early 1500s, are worth a stop.
Panetti Palace
From Piazza Vecchia, on the other hand, you can reach it via Via Annibal Caro, lined with Renaissance and Baroque buildings, and at number 37 you will find the Palazzo Panetti.
Inside, you can admire an elegant inner courtyard with an octagonal cistern. Continuing along the street, on the facade of number 61, you can see a Baroque-style shrine with an image of the Virgin.
Finally, in one of the apartments on the main floor there is still a monumental fireplace.
