ROME TOURS
What to see in Rome at night: a tree-stop itinerary in the capital
Rome reveals its most romantic side around sunset, when the city is bathed in the warm golden glow of streetlights and the tourist crowds have disappeared. Experience the charm of the Eternal City’s main attractions at night with this private driving tour complete with on-board Wi-Fi. Admire the Castel Sant’Angelo and St. Peter’s Basilica while it is illuminated, experience the lively nightlife of Trastevere and stop to throw a coin in the Piazza Navona.
St. Peter’s Square
My advice is to start your exploration from St. Peter’s Square, immersed in darkness. This was the point from which we began our nighttime visit to Rome. It doesn’t even look like the immense, architectural square, that we see invaded by the crowds, on television. Or full of groups, during daytime visits
St. Peter’s Square at night, is simply enchanting. Bernini’s colonnade, which symbolically embraces anyone who enters the square, immersed in darkness and with the faint light of the street lamps caressing it, seems to emerge from an arcane world.
St. Peter’s Basilica, a symbol of Christianity and a sublime work of art, is like a beacon for everyone who comes in front of it. Not only from a religious point of view. But for anyone who is a fine admirer of the history of art and architecture.
It is a strange sensation to have St. Peter’s Square at your complete disposal. Without anyone pushing you, without crowds of people preventing you from admiring its details. A luxury that can only be enjoyed by visiting the site at night.
Castel Sant’Angelo
The second stop on our night-time itinerary to discover Rome is Castel Sant’Angelo. Quite close to St. Peter’s Square, it is connected to the Basilica through a corridor called “il Passetto”.
A solid fortress, which dominates the Roman night with its imposing presence. Commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as his mausoleum, it took its current name centuries later, when Pope Gregory I witnessed the apparition of the Archangel Michael sheathing his sword, during a procession organized to ask God for an end to the plague that was decimating Rome.
The best place to enjoy the night show is from Ponte Sant’Angelo. Walking on this structure suspended over the Tiber, you can admire all the monumentality of Castel Sant’Angelo. And get lost with your gaze on a brilliant Rome, which is reflected in the river. The lights create a reflection, in which it seems to glimpse a submerged city… instead it is always her, Rome, that becomes the lady and owner of every corner of the seven hills.
Piazza Navona
Why, you are wondering, is this blessed girl advising us to go in the evening, to visit Piazza Navona? Why, if everything is closed? Stop! Stop everyone! In this “thought-sentence”, the only correct passage is the “blessed girl”. Because Rome never closes. Granted, you won’t be able to access the monuments, but an exuberant and cheerful Rome awaits you anyway!
It’s as if the entire city poured out into the streets, to experience the night and its liveliness. Clubs, restaurants, trattorias, ice cream parlors, are stormed by people. Piazza Navona fills up with Romans and visitors of all ages, young students and children, just as in the past it filled up with water! In what is the ancient Stadium of Domitian, in fact, real naval battles took place in ancient times.
Today, however, those who walk through Piazza Navona do so to relax, enjoy the cool of the evening or, simply, the grandeur of the Baroque. Standing out above all is the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, now officially an “architectural bench” for those who move around Rome. In the sense that, rarely, it is found without “visitors amiably sprawled on the marble”, chatting or eating an ice cream.
More Baroque in the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, in the Fountain of Neptune and in the Fountain of the Moor, artfully illuminated in the Roman night.
