The ruins of Pompeii are currently one of the largest archaeological sites open to visitors in the world. And, it is worth highlighting: the only place where you can see, in its entirety, a Roman city frozen in time. Pompeii is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 3.5 million visitors a year, and since 1997 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park has 66 hectares, through which about 44 hectares and 1500 buildings have already been excavated. There are 3 entrances (Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro) and good infrastructure for visitors. Restrooms, lockers, souvenir shop, rooms with temporary exhibitions and even a restaurant/snack bar are available.

Not all buildings are open to visitors, and even then, on a day tour, you might not be able to visit all that are. From residences to amphitheaters, passing by temples, a brothel or a laundromat… there’s a lot to see. And, 20 years from now, the visits will perhaps be even more revealing… during the tour, you will likely encounter areas where restoration work or even excavations are still going ahead. Best Rome to Pompeii tours some visits:

HOUSE DOS VETTII

It is one of the richest and most famous houses in Pompeii. It was owned by the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, two wealthy merchants. Right at the entrance, you can see the painting of Priapus, the God of prosperity – symbolizing the fortune acquired by its owners. The garden is its focal point, with several statues.

HOUSE OF THE TRAGIC POET

This house brings with it two curiosities (and, not least, it is one of the main points of interest during visits to Pompeii): the first is the mosaic at its entrance – forming the drawing of a dog plus the inscription Cave Canem (which means “beware of the dog”). The second is the fact that it served as inspiration for the novel The Last Days of Pompeii, by the English writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

HOUSE OF THE FAUN

The so-called “House of the Faun” is one of the largest houses in all of Pompeii, occupying approximately 3000m². Needless to say, it was owned by a rather wealthy family, right? The opulence can be seen not only in its size but also in details that remain unchanged to this day, such as the marble mosaics on the floor, the capitals of its columns, etc. Its name comes from the faun statue found there during excavations. A copy is still kept inside the house, while the original is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

FORUM OF POMPEII

The forum of Pompeii was a large rectangular square, which functioned as a kind of nucleus of life – social, administrative, religious… – of the city. Around it were the main public buildings as well as temples of Pompeii. Despite being visible from almost everywhere, Vesuvius has a prominent position on the forum’s horizon.

FORUM BARNS

The so-called barns of the forum were used, in the past, as a kind of vegetable and fruit market. Today, they house a collection of more than nine thousand artifacts found in the excavations of Pompeii. There are everything from pots, vases, jugs, tables, to molds of victims of the eruption and even a dog. The material is protected by a grid and you can’t get too close, but it’s worth a look.

LUPANAR

The lupanar was one of the brothels (the most famous) of Pompeii. There, prostitutes were, in general, slaves who earned between 2 and 8 Asses (the currency of the time) for their service. The construction has two floors – on top were the residences of the owner of the brothel and the slaves, below are the rooms where the services were carried out. Above the doors are, to this day, sexual frescoes. Some say they served as a kind of menu for visitors.

LAUNDRY ROOM

(Fullonica di Stephanus) – Originally a house, it was transformed into a laundry room in the last years of Pompeii. In the center of the construction, visitors find a large “tank”, with a skylight above. In the garden, other tanks. When the laundry was excavated between 1912 and 1913, the skeleton of its owner, Stephanus, was found, suggesting an attempt to escape the eruption. It is believed that Stephanus’ employees were all slaves, and spent hours and hours washing clothes with a mixture that carried, among other things, human and animal urine.

GARDEN OF THE FUGITIVES

(Orto dei Fuggiaschi) – The garden of the fugitives was originally a residential area. Later, transformed into a vineyard, it hosted large open-air banquets. There were found the remains of 13 people, including adults and children. It is believed that they were trapped there while the city was covered by volcanic rocks. The casts of the bodies of the 13 victims, made in plaster, are currently on display at the site and, therefore, it is one of the main points of the visit for those who want to see the “petrified inhabitants” of Pompeii up close.

VILLA OF THE MYSTERIES

Despite being a little out of the way, far from the other important buildings in Pompeii, the Villa of the Mysteries is quite popular. There is one of the largest and best preserved frescoes in the entire city. Occupying three walls, it shows a mysterious ritual, with women, fauns, winged beings and other curious figures. It is estimated that the building dates back to the 2nd century BC, having been subsequently remodeled between 80-70 BC.
