In Praça de São Pedro, at the entrance door of the Vatican, it was designed by Bernini, one of the greatest sculptors who exist in the world. Above, an Egyptian obelisk stands, being part of the ancient Circus of Black and the only respite that remains of it.

The shape of the square symbolizes a big embrace, as if the church were listening to your fieis. Therefore, at each new conclave, Catholics of the entire world come together to hope for the vote and celebrate the new Pope.

At the Basilica of São Pedro you were guided by the local where you entered Pedro, one of the apóstolos of Jesus and who is considered the first Pope of the Catholic Church. Since his death, several temples and churches have been built in his home, but not as imposed by the current basilica. Possible 218 meters of compression and 136 of height, so its dome can be seen from various points of Rome.

The Basilica of São Pedro was completed in 1626, taking 120 years to get ready. Its construction brought together by the world’s greatest renaissance artists and is now a UNESCO world heritage site.

Visiting Rome and not visiting the Basílica de São Pedro is a crime. The church goes very far from religion. Its construction is a first work done in the home, perfected both architecturally, pictorially and culturally. This project passes through many of the most varied architects of the time, including Rafael and Michelangelo, who is the main author of the art we know today.

Pantheon

A symbol of pagan and polytheistic antiquity, the Pantheon in Rome, or Pantheon, as the Italians call it, is the best-preserved ancient monument in the Eternal City. Also a symbol of ancient rituals and beliefs, it was erected in honor of not one, but “All the Gods” by Marcus Agrippa, between 27 BC and 25 BC, during the reign of Augustus.

One of the most famous tourist attractions in Rome, the Pantheon has more than 2 thousand years of history and is famous for the peculiar architecture of its dome, which has gigantic proportions, without supporting columns.

Furthermore, at its summit there is an opening of around 9 meters in diameter (the oculus) and, even so, it does not allow rainwater to wet the interior of this magnificent work of Italian engineering, used for centuries.

Piazza Navona

It is one of the city’s most popular tourist spots and you can’t miss it! See all our tips about this tour:

One of the places that most attracts visitors in Rome, precisely because this square is beautiful, historic and has beautiful monuments in its surroundings.

It’s a great place to take beautiful photos, as well as meals in one of the restaurants there. It is worth noting that the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, which was sculpted between 1648 and 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is one of the most famous attractions in the square and represents the most important rivers in the world at that time.

Given all this beauty and historical context, you can’t miss Piazza Navona.

Colosseum

Visiting the Coliseum is one of the things that every person who likes traveling and history needs to do (at least once in their life!). A mixture of feelings surrounds us, as at the same time we are impressed by a historical monument that is more than 2,000 years old, we are shocked by everything that happened inside. A visit to the Colosseum in Rome is an ancient journey into the world of gladiators, Roman emperors and bloodthirsty audiences.

Trevi Fountain

Have you ever been told that you should throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain and you don’t know why? Discover the history of the most beautiful fountain in Rome and the entire world.

Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful fountain in Rome. At 20 meters wide by 26 meters high, the Trevi Fountain is also the largest fountain in the city. The origin of the fountain dates back to 19 BC, a time when the Fontana formed the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The first fountain was built during the Renaissance, under the orders of Pope Nicholas V.

Final appearance of the Trevi Fountain dates back to 1762 when, after several years of work promoted by Nicola Salvi, it was completed by Giuseppe Pannini.

As a curiosity, Trevi’s name derives from Tre Vie (three ways), as the fountain was the meeting point of three streets.

Myth of the Trevi Fountain

Why are there always people in Fontana throwing coins into the water and taking photos?

The myth was born with the film “The Fountain of Desires” in 1954, which says the following:

If you flip a coin: you will return to Rome.
Two coins: you will find love with a beautiful Italian woman (or Italian).
Three coins: you will marry the person you met.
For this to work, it is recommended to throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder.
