Florence, half day tour: 3 hours walking Cathedral, Giotto’s Tower, Baptistery with Bronze doors, Gate of Paradise, Ponte Vecchio, Mercato del Porcellino, etc

Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, also known as the city of Michelangelo. Visit the city center, with the Bell Tower, the Baptistery and the Cathedral, which constitute an extraordinary set of white, green and pink marbles, with which the transition from art to Florence from the medieval to the Renaissance. External visit to the Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore, symbol of the wealth and power of Florence during the 13th and 14th centuries, with Brunelleschi’s Dome that contrasts with the silhouette of the Campanile designed and initiated by Giotto, the Baptistery, a Roman construction famous for its Bronze doors, Piazza della Signoria, the Church of Santa Cruz which is located in one of the oldest squares in the city.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiori

Along with the museums, this is one of the main tips for what to do in Florence. With a green, white and red marble facade, the Catedral di Santa Maria del Fiori is the city’s most imposing attraction.

In addition to all the charming architecture, the Duomo di Firenze (Florence Cathedral), as it is also called, has a dome over 100 meters high that is considered a work of art. The artist Brunnelleschi built this dome out of tiles and achieved the feat of putting it on the list of the largest in the world. Also part of the church’s architectural complex are the Bell Tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni.

Rome to Florence Tour

You can visit the inside of the cathedral and climb the dome (you can also climb the tower). But it’s worth taking some time to admire the art on the baptistry doors. You will see biblical stories told in bronze and gold with incredible detail. The doors are replicas, but the originals are in the Opera Museum.

Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is the main square in Florence. Considered the heart of the city’s political power, it was once a place dedicated to Roman baths and, later, the scene of many political demonstrations, parties and celebrations.

It is in this square that Palazzo Vecchio is also located. The building, which is one of the local symbols, was once the former residence of the Dukes of Florence and is now the seat of the city hall. But it draws attention to the medieval structure, the tower that is the largest in the city and Michelangelo’s David welcoming you. It is a replica of the sculpture, of course. But a curious fact is that initially the original Davi was located exactly in that location before being transported to the museum.

On the outskirts of the square you will also see the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open gallery with sensational works.

Palazzo Pitti and Bóboli Gardens

Completely in Renaissance style, Palazzo Pitti was also one of the official residences of the Dukes of Florence. Nowadays, it is a complex of museums, such as:

Palatina Gallery: artistic collection ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque.
Gallery of Modern Art: paintings, works and sculptures, especially by Italian artists.
Silver Museum: collection of oriental porcelain, precious stones and antique jewelry.
Costume Gallery: museum about the History of Italian Fashion

Behind the palace you can visit one of the largest and most beautiful green areas in Florence. The Boboli Gardens are around 45m² and in addition to nature, there is a lake, fountains, statues, sculptures and even caves.

Old Bridge

The Old Bridge is on every list of things to do in Florence. After all, it is one of the city’s main tourist attractions and is present in most of the free tour itineraries offered. Initially, the bridge was a meat market, with several butchers along it. However, Ferdinando I was too bothered by the smell of the region and decided to change the entire occupation of the place. Nowadays, the bridge that survived the bombings of the Second World War houses several very expensive jewelry stores.

Above the bridge runs a corridor that connects Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery to Palazzo Piti. It is known as the Vasarian Corridor and was used by the Medici family so that they did not need to use the bridge and could move smoothly through the city at a time when they did not have full support from the population.

Rome to Florence Tour

Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo has the most beautiful panoramic view of Florence. The square is at the top and is one of the best places to enjoy the sunset. From the top you will see the entire city, with a special emphasis on the Catedral di Santa Maria del Fiori, Ponte Vecchio, River Arno and Palazzo Vecchio. Other places, such as the Basilia di San Miniato al Monte and the Porta Santa cemetery, where the writer Carlo Collodi, creator of Pinocchio, is buried.

Basilica of San Lorenzo

Florence, as throughout Italy, has many churches. But some stand out, even if they seem like nothing special, as is the case with the Basilica di San Lorenzo. It is one of the oldest in the city and for a long time was considered the Cathedral of Florence. This is where the mausoleum of the Medici family, the Lords of Florence, is located.

Palazzo Medici Riccardi

Another historical tip for what to do in Florence is to visit the Palazzo Medici Ricardi. Built in 1481, it has medieval and Renaissance characteristics and was the first residence of the Medici family, housing them for more than 150 years. Over time, the Medici sold it to the Ricardi family, who expanded it, but insisted on maintaining the entire external structure. The architecture of the palace is beautiful and it’s worth staying there for a while to appreciate every detail.

Republic Square

Piazza della Repubblica is right in the center of Florence. The square once hosted the forum and the medieval market during the Roman Empire, was a Jewish ghetto and today is home to cafes, street performers and the city’s most famous carousel.
