Rome is a destination that doesn’t take long to conquer us. The capital of Italy, full of history and impressive buildings, is a place that quickly wins our hearts. With museums, excellent restaurants, good public transport and a variety of tourist attractions, the Italian capital is a mixture of tradition and innovation.

Lively, cheerful and, at the same time, chaotic, Rome is a place where modern life goes hand in hand with the past. It is such a versatile place that when you walk through its streets, you can come across the newest showcases in the world of fashion or see yourself in front of beautiful buildings that are almost two thousand years old.

Colosseum, one of the greatest attractions in the world

There is no way to take a trip to Rome and not go to the Colosseum or at least take a picture in its surroundings. The ancient Roman arena where gladiators fought is one of the must-see sights in the city and represents much of the country’s history. The place was built from 72. AD. as an arena where people from different social classes could have fun and be entertained, especially with fights between gladiators and wild animals. It is believed that the audience of the arena reached up to 70 thousand spectators!

The construction of the space is impressive, not only because of its size and the enormous stone blocks, but also because of what is known about its construction during the Roman Empire, when there were elevators and ramps that provided access between the lower part and top of the sand. The so-called Flavio Amphitheater is open to the public, who can visit it internally on their own or with a guide.

Roman Forum and Palatine

An integral part of the entrance to the Coliseum, the Roman Forum corresponds to an area close to the old arena, and is the space where the main activities of the life of imperial and republican Roman society took place. There were public and religious buildings, such as temples and squares, where speeches, processes and public ceremonies took place.

Today the area is in ruins, but some buildings are very well preserved and can be visited inside. Among the points of interest of the Roman Forum are the Temple of Saturn, Basilica Emilia, Arch of Settimio Severo, and the Via Sacra, the main street of the time.

The Palatine Hill, on the other hand, is one of the hills that surround Rome and is close to the Roman Forum, but about 40 meters above and which, due to its height, offers a very nice view of the Roman Forum. It is in the ancient Palatine area that the city of Rome is believed to have been founded, around VIII BC. It is another tour that holds the remains of ancient buildings and palaces made for the high Roman society, in addition to offering a beautiful view of the entire archaeological site.

Trevi Fountain

Measuring 26 meters high and 20 meters wide, the Trevi Fountain is the largest fountain in the Italian capital and must be on your list of must-do things in Rome, whether during the day or at night. The setting for many films, it is an icon of Rome, is part of one of the facades of Palazzo Poli and was designed by Nicola Salvi.

Located in the heart of the capital, it is a tourist spot in Rome that is always full practically at any time of the day — those who want to see it without the competition of faces in their photos can try to wake up very early or go almost at dawn to see it with fewer people around, this is easier especially in winter, when the flow of tourists is lower.

Pantheon and Rotonda Square

In the historic center of the city, the Pantheon is an ancient Roman temple dedicated to all the gods and converted into a church, with the name of Basilica of Santa Maria and Martyrs in Rome. You can’t miss it, especially since it’s a free tourist spot!

It is a place of impressive architecture, with a circular shape, which has a unique dome, 43 meters in diameter, which has a central opening where light enters. Inside the Pantheon are the tombs of important figures in Italian history, such as the painter Rafael Sanzio and two Italian kings, Humberto I and Vittorio Emanuelle II, a symbol of Italian unification.

Entrance to the monument is free.

Capitoline Museums and Square

It is one of the 7 hills on which Rome was founded and which since the 16th century has taken on the appearance it has today, designed by Michelangelo.

The square, which brought together the city’s civil activities until the end of the Middle Ages, and houses important buildings such as Palazzo Senatorio, Nuovo and dei Conservatori – in these last two palaces are the Capitoline Museums –, in addition to an emblematic staircase, where many people take pictures.
