2-day Rome itinerary (for the first time)

Check out the 2-day itinerary in Rome that we have prepared for you! This time will be enough to be enchanted by the Eternal City and want to come back with much more time!

Dedicating just 2 days to Rome is not enough and if you accept our suggestion, we recommend that you try to stay longer in the Italian capital. The minimum would be to stay 3 to 4 days and even then, I would have to leave several nice tours aside.

Anyway, regardless of the reason that led you to stay only 2 days in Rome, the more planned the itinerary, the better.

Day 1: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain

We like to start our itineraries in an impressive way, so the first place to visit will be the most imposing monument in the Italian capital: the Colosseum.

Rome in Two Days

This, without a doubt, is the most important monument in Rome and even in all of Italy. In 2007 he was informally elected one of the seven wonders of the modern world. And it’s not?! Sumptuous, its construction is very old, with completion dated in 80 AD.

During the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles, such as simulated sea battles, wild animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles and dramas based on classical mythology.

While there, you can visit the interior of the building, which is very interesting, and this is a paid attraction.

When you buy the ticket to visit the Colosseum, the tour of the Roman Forum will already be included, which you can access in a short walk.

Together with the Colosseum, strolling through the Roman Forum is like transporting yourself to the heart of the Roman Empire, as for centuries this was the center of power and Roman public life.

Ceremonies, elections, public speeches, criminal trials, clashes between gladiators took place here, and it also functioned as the center of commercial affairs.

The visit consists more of getting to know its ruins and imagining how these buildings of great cultural importance worked.

After these visits through the centuries, it is worth walking back to the Coliseum, continuing for another 1.5 km (about 20 minutes) to Piazza Venezia.

Piazza Venezia is a large square, dominated by the huge monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (“Il Vittoriano”, a tribute to the first king of Unified Italy).

From there, continue for another 800 meters until you reach the Pantheon.

Rome in Two Days

Here you can visit the monument and take a break to catch your breath, having a Spritz or a wine and eating a delicious bruschetta in front of the Pantheon – here are several restaurant options for you to enjoy.

The imposing Pantheon, built between 27 to 14 BC, is one of the best preserved monuments of Ancient Rome.

Among other important figures, here are the tombs of painters Rafael and Annibale Carraci, as well as monarchs Victor Emanuel II and Humberto I. Your visit is free, don’t miss it!

Ending this very hectic morning, we suggest that the beginning of the afternoon start with a walk in Piazza Navona: it will be about 500 meters of walking there.

During the journey, of course, you will observe details of the Italian capital, such as the bustle of its streets, flowers in the windows, many typical restaurants, bakeries, among others.

Navona is home to three beautiful fountains (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno) and is very lively, full of cafes, restaurants and street performers.

Piazza Navona is less than a 15-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, our next stop that obviously couldn’t be missed on our 2-day itinerary in Rome.

The wonderful Trevi Fountain is on that list of open-air monuments that transform Rome into a veritable open-air museum.

It is also one of the city’s icons, a place that is full of tourists who love to observe the fountain and make wishes by throwing a coin in its waters.

After visiting the Trevi Fountain, to end your first day in Rome, we will leave you more free to walk around without obligations, and our suggestion is that you choose “by eye” a good place to have dinner in the city.

Day 2: Spanish Steps, Vatican City, Tiber River and Trastevere

With 2 days in Rome, it is possible to dedicate an entire day to visiting the walled Vatican City, visiting the famous Vatican Museums, the Basilica and St. Peter’s Square.

It will be a very meaningful and cultural tour.

It is worth remembering that the visit to the Vatican Museums is very popular, so one option is to book online, so you don’t waste so much time waiting in line to buy tickets.

So you also guarantee that on the day you planned to visit, the museums will be open for visiting.

Rome in Two Days

Initially, we suggest that you start your day with a delicious breakfast and then visit Piazza di Spagna, with its famous staircase.

From there, getting to the Vatican is very simple. The Vatican is the seat of the Catholic Church and the official residence of the Pope. We highlight here the helical staircase of the Vatican Museums.

Here are located the Vatican Museums. The museums have this name in the plural precisely because they cover a cluster of museums, including the Sistine Chapel, Raphael Rooms, Pio Clementino Museum, Gregorian Etruscan Museum, Gregorian Egyptian Museum, Chiaramonti Museum, Map Rooms, Pinacoteca Vaticana and much more!

For this reason, visiting them will be intense and deserves to be very well planned. The most disputed and sought after place, of course, is the Sistine Chapel. It is there that the Pope conducts mass and it is also where the Conclave meets to elect a new Pope.

In the Chapel you will appreciate beautiful masterpieces. On the ceiling are frescoes containing scenes from the Old Testament, among them one of the most famous by Michelangelo, “The Creation of Adam”. On the altar wall, another work by the painter stands out: “The Last Judgment”.

At the Gregorian Etruscan Museum you will have access to objects from the Etruscan people from the 9th century BC to the 1st century BC, such as ceramics, bronzes, gold and silver objects.

At the Gregorian Egyptian Museum it will be possible to see several Egyptian pieces and even sarcophagi and a mummy, with explanations of how the mummification process worked.

The Raphael Rooms are a group of four rooms decorated between 1508 and 1524 by the great Renaissance painter and his assistants, at the request of Pope Julius II.

This is one of Raphael’s masterpieces and represents the Academy of Athens.

In the Pio Clementino Museum there is a statue of Hercules, while in the Pinacoteca Vaticana you will find works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli and Caravaggio.

Rome in Two Days

In the Chiaramonti Museum there are statues and busts of Roman emperors such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Trajan, etc. Very interesting!

After this impressive visit, take the opportunity to also visit St. Peter’s Square and visit the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica.

There, an essential work to contemplate is Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Michelangelo’s sculpture is one of the most famous works of art in the world and depicts the Virgin Mary in mourning after the death of her son Jesus. It was sculpted when Michelangelo was just over 20 years old.

After visiting the Vatican, try to explore a little of the region, get to know the Tiber River and see Castel Sant´Angelo. It is not worth going there, as time is running out and the place is not very attractive.

To end your big day, the suggestion is to go beyond the Tiber River, in Trastevere.

The origin of the name tells us exactly that: Trastevere means beyond the Tiber River (or Tevere). Trastevere is the most charming, passionate and bohemian neighborhood in Rome. The idea here is to do everything without haste. It will be the best way to end your 2-day itinerary in Rome.

Here we are only going to suggest that you walk to Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and discover the Basilica of the same name. From there, feel free to explore this delightful neighborhood that is truly enthralling. We’ll leave you free to handpick a good typical Italian restaurant for dinner: there’s no shortage of options!

This is our suggestion for a 2-day itinerary in Rome.

It will be well attended and of course many wonderful places will be left for the next time, however, the most famous icons of the Italian capital will be able to visit.

So that’s it, I hope you liked it! 😉 If you can stay more than 2 days in Rome, check out our other Itineraries.
