Rome is a destination that doesn’t take long to conquer us. The capital of Italy, full of history and impressive buildings, is a place that quickly wins our hearts. With museums, excellent restaurants and a variety of tourist attractions, the Italian capital is a mixture of tradition and innovation.

Vivid, cheerful and, at the same time, chaotic, where modern life goes hand in hand with the past. It is such a versatile place that when you walk through its streets, you can come across the newest showcases in the world of fashion or see yourself in front of beautiful buildings that are almost two thousand years old.

Rome Day Trip

Colosseum, one of the greatest attractions in the world

There is no way to take a trip to Rome and not go to the Colosseum or at least take a picture in its surroundings. The ancient Roman arena where gladiators fought is one of the must-see sights in the city and represents much of the country’s history. The place was built from 72. AD. as an arena where people from different social classes could have fun and be entertained, especially with fights between gladiators and wild animals. It is believed that the audience of the arena reached up to 70 thousand spectators!

The construction of the space is impressive, not only for its size and the enormous stone blocks, but also for what is known of its construction at the time of the Roman Empire, when there were elevators and ramps that provided access between the lower part and top of the sand.

The Colosseum ticket is part of a combo that includes the Roman and Palatine Forum. The three attractions together cost €18 – buy your ticket to visit the Colosseum here.

Rome Day Trip

Roman Forum and Palatine

An integral part of the entrance to the Coliseum, the Roman Forum corresponds to an area close to the old arena, and is the space where the main activities of the life of imperial and republican Roman society took place. There were public and religious buildings, such as temples and squares, where speeches, processes and public ceremonies took place.

Today the area is in ruins, but some buildings are very well preserved and can be visited inside. Among the points of interest in the Roman Forum are the Temple of Saturn, Basilica Emilia, Arch of Settimio Severo, and the Via Sacra, the main street of the time.

The Palatine Hill, on the other hand, is one of the hills that surround Rome and is close to the Roman Forum, but about 40 meters above and which, due to its height, offers a very nice view of the Roman Forum. It is in the ancient Palatine area that the city of Rome is believed to have been founded, around VIII BC. It is another tour that holds the remains of ancient buildings and palaces made for the high Roman society, in addition to offering a beautiful view of the entire archaeological site.

The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine are part of an integrated ticket that includes the three tourist attractions and therefore there are those who visit all three on the same day, but the ticket can be used on 2 consecutive days. Visiting the three attractions in the same day can be a little tiring because you walk a lot inside them, so we suggest dividing your visit into two days: one day just for the Colosseum and another for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Rome Day Trip

Trevi Fountain

Measuring 26 meters high and 20 meters wide, the Trevi Fountain is the largest fountain in the Italian capital and must be on your list of must-do things in Rome, whether during the day or at night.

The setting for many films, it is an icon of Rome, is part of one of the facades of Palazzo Poli and was designed by Nicola Salvi.

Located in the heart of the capital, it is a tourist spot in Rome that is always full practically at any time of the day. A tradition among visitors is to throw a coin backwards into the fountain’s waters, with the intention of bringing good luck and returning to the city — the amount is collected and used for charity.

Pantheon and Rotonda Square

In the historic center of the city, the Pantheon is an ancient Roman temple dedicated to all the gods and converted into a church, with the name of Basilica of Santa Maria and Martyrs in Rome. It is a place of impressive architecture, with a circular shape and enormous ceiling height, which has a unique dome, 43 meters in diameter, which has a central opening where light and occasional rain enter. Inside the Pantheon are the tombs of important personalities in the history of Italy, such as. the painter Rafael Sanzio and two Italian kings, Humberto I and Vittorio Emanuelle II, symbol of Italian unification.

As it is a church, the place has free access and is located in the square (Piazza) of the Rotonda. As it is a religious temple, be aware of the rules of dress and behavior during the visit, especially during mass times on site. This tip, in fact, is valid for all the churches you visit in Rome.

St. Peter’s Square and Basilica

The seat of the Catholic Church is located in the smallest sovereign state in the world, the Vatican. And visiting the Vatican when in Rome is a really cool tour, even if Catholicism is not your religion. The space is open to the public and has monumental and iconic buildings, including St. Peter’s Square, a baroque-style square open to the faithful from all over the world, and St. Peter’s Basilica.

St. Peter’s Basilica, with its 23,000 square meters, is the most important Catholic building in the world. Its imposing construction, rich in details, with huge columns, received contributions from several artists, including Raphael and Michelangelo. The site is recognized as a UNESCO heritage site and among its points of interest are the tomb of Pope John Paul II and its dome, open to the public and offering a beautiful view — access to the dome can only be done by stairs, for €8 (551 steps) or elevator + stairs (310 steps), for €10.

Piazza Venezia (Venice Square)

One of the main squares in Rome, Piazza Venezia marks the meeting of 5 major streets of the Italian capital and gathers important buildings around it, among them the National Monument to Vittorio Emanuelle II, symbol of Italian unification.

The imposing monument to Vittorio Emanuelle, or “Altar of the Fatherland”, was built between 1885 and 1935 in neoclassical style, with white marble. On site is the Risorgimento Museum, as the Italian unification movement is called, which has a panoramic terrace from which you have a beautiful view of the city and the Roman Forum, and houses the tomb of the unknown soldier, representing all those who died during World War I.

Entrance to the monument is free.

Capitol Square and Museums

The Capitoline Hill is one of the 7 hills on which Rome was founded and which since the 16th century has taken on the appearance it has today, designed by Michelangelo. The square, which brought together the city’s civil activities until the end of the Middle Ages, was created to face Saint Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican, and houses important buildings such as Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatori – in these last two palaces are the Capitoline Museums –, in addition to an emblematic staircase, where many people take pictures.

The Capitoline Museums (Musei Capitolini) are part of a complex of great importance for the city, since they were founded in 1471, one of the oldest museums in the world. They have important works related to the local culture, including the statue of the Loba Capitolina, a statue that is the main symbol of the origin of Rome.

Piazza Navona (Piazza Navona)

Located in the historic center of Rome, Piazza Navona is another tourist attraction in Rome that you will probably end up visiting in your wanderings around the region. The square was built where a Roman stadium used to be and has several beautiful buildings around it, some of Baroque architecture, as well as restaurants and cafes to sit and enjoy the coming and going of people walking. It is a place that is generally busy, with street performers and people having a good gelato.

The square has 3 large fountains, namely the Fontana dei Quatro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno, in addition to imposing buildings such as the Pamphilj Palace, where the Brazilian embassy in Rome is located.
