Pisa + Lucca + Chianti

PISA

Best known among the day trips from Rome is the one that leads to the leaning tower city. Small university town has a jaw-dropping set of works that many people end up not noticing in their entirety because they focus their attention only on the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Leaning tower, of course, is the region’s best-known attraction and is actually quite crooked. Its inclination was due to the terrain of the area in which it was built, which, composed of clay and sand, did not support the columns of the tower. The construction, started in 1173, began to give way a few years after its construction and when this was realized, new strategies were adopted for the tower to remain standing, but without much success. After being closed to the public at the risk of collapsing, the tower was reopened in 2001 after a renovation process and maneuvers to support the construction. Today the tower remains leaning, but it is in safe condition and it is possible to access its top, reserving a ticket for that.

In Piazza dei Miracoli, the square that concentrates the main attractions of Pisa, in addition to the Tower, there is the Cathedral of Pisa, which has free admission and a monumental architecture, the Camposanto (a building with several frescoes on the walls and which served as a cemetery, the Campo dei Miracoli, the Baptistery of San Giovani and the Museu delle Sinopie, which tells the story of the frescoes in Camposanto. in particular, it draws attention for having a beautiful architecture, beautiful gardens and being much less touristy while the Leaning Tower of Pisa is crowded.

LUCCA

Small, the city of Lucca is a nice surprise for the most demanding travellers. Founded by the Etruscans, it was a Roman colony and also taken by Napoleon, who left his sister Elisa in charge of the city.

Lucca’s biggest attraction is its 16th-century wall, which runs 4 km around the city. The beautiful wall, which is long and can be easily covered on foot or by bicycle (there are places to rent bicycles or ATVs), allows you to admire beautiful buildings, gardens and wooded areas.
