A perfect itinerary for those who want to see the main tourist attractions in Florence, eat delicious ice cream and taste a little of Florence’s culinary delights. I’m sure you will love

Florence is an open-air museum. It will certainly surprise you with its narrow alleys full of charm, with the colors of the evening on the Arno River and with the wonderful sunset seen from Piazalle Michelangelo.

A complete experience: its churches with elaborate ornaments house years of art history, its delicious restaurants offer the best of Tuscan cuisine, and its museums are among the best in the world.

Piazza del Duomo, Florence Cathedral

Piazza del Duomo is home to some of Florence’s most important monuments, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore (better known as the Florence Duomo), famous for its colorful marble facade and Brunelleschi dome, Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistery of San Giovanni. With a colorful marble facade that seems to open up between the tight alleys of Florence, the third largest church in the world will make you gasp from the first moment. Step inside to see the dome’s detailed fresco.

Entrance to the cathedral is free, but to visit the other monuments you will have to buy individual tickets. I highly recommend climbing Brunelleschi’s dome which has the best views of Florence and the visit to the Baptistery, which has a beautiful mosaic dome, the famous bronze doors “ Gates of Paradise” by Ghiberti

Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio is the oldest and also the most photogenic in Florence. It is a pedestrian-only bridge with open spans that provide special photos of the River Arno. The bridge is full of jewelry stores – and in the past there were fruit shops and even butchers, but the bridge smelled so bad and so much dirt was thrown into the river that in 1593 Ferdinand I declared that from then on only jewelry stores could operate on the bridge. The custom remains and oriental tourists who are jewelry buyers love it.

In the center of the bridge there is a small square with a bust of the jeweler Benvenuto Cellini and open spaces with views of the Arno River and the city of Florence.

Tip: the best place to photograph Ponte Vecchio is from the center of Ponte Santa Trinitá

Piazalle Michelangelo

Pizalle Michelangelo is the best place in Florence to watch the sunset. The square is located at the top of a hill and has incredible views of the city of Florence, including the Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo and the Church of Santa Croce. Square got its name because the original project included replicas of many of Michelangelo’s sculptures and a small museum dedicated to the artist. Project did not succeed and the square only has a replica of the statue of David, the building that was intended for the museum became a restaurant.

Today Piazzeta Michelangelo is the most popular place in the city to enjoy the sunset.

Piazza dela Repubblica

Piazza dela Repubblica has marked the center of Florence since medieval times. Praça da República is completely symmetrical and decorated with imposing arches and columns. It is where Florence’s iconic carousel is located, a perfect choice for anyone traveling with children, and it is where some of the liveliest shows with street artists in Florence take place.

The Piazza dela Republica region is home to some of the city’s main designer stores, jewelry stores and one of the three Apple Stores in Italy. The Hard Rock Café in Florence, which I know many of you love, is also in the square.

Central Market

The central market is a space with several delicious food stores and local products. The fun is to calmly browse the small food stands, see what is being prepared at each one and trust your nose and instinct to choose something delicious. If you enjoy cheese, you’ll hardly leave without trying the delicious freshly made buffalo mozzarella.

And for those who want to buy souvenirs: Next to the central market there is a market that sells souvenirs, leather products and souvenirs. It’s worth looking at everything carefully and haggling a lot before buying.

Basilica of Santa Croce

The Basilica di Santa Croce is a Franciscan Church, that is, a construction characterized by simplicity in the choice of materials and ornaments. It contains the tomb of Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli, the chapels painted with frescoes by Giotto, Donatello and one of Cimabue’s famous crucifixes. The highlight of Santa Croce are the chapels painted with beautiful frescoes by Gioto, the colorful stained glass windows at the bottom of the central altar and the hyper-detailed tombs.

Visit details: Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm | Sunday from 12:30pm to 5:45pm

Santa Maria Novella

Located in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, it is a Gothic-style church, with stained glass windows, a wonderful altar and one of Giotto’s crucifixes. Santa Maria Novela has high ceilings, several elaborate frescoes and a wonderful cloister.

Visit details: Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 5:30pm / Friday from 11am to 5:30pm / Sunday from 1pm to 5:30pm

Church of San Lorenzo

This is the only basilica in Florence that does not have a marble facade (the exterior is entirely made of exposed stone), with the exception of a dome similar in shape to a cathedral – which has details painted in white. The visit is divided between church (free entry) or church+museum.

The church of San Lorenzo was built by Brunneleschi (the same architect as the Dome of the Duomo) during the Renaissance and has an incredible collection with works by Donatelo, Michelangelo and a new sacristy inspired by Michelangelo’s designs. It is one of the richest churches in Florence – after all, it was the private church of the Medici family – and it is very different from the other churches in the city with very large internal spaces and rounded arches.

Visit details: Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5:30pm.
