If you are in Rome, you can take a tour of the Amalfi Coast. Keep in mind that it will be an incredible experience that the region has to offer. One option for those in Rome would like to take a small group tour with family and friends that takes you to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano in the same day.

WHAT TO DO

The Strada Statale 163 – or Amalfi Road – starts exactly in Piano di Sorrento and then runs along the coast to Vietri sul Mare, passing through the towns of Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori and Maiori (next to the Tyrrhenian Sea). Only Ravello is away from the 163, right at the top of the mountain.

A vertiginous road, literally carved into the ravines. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are the most emblematic towns in the region, and our drivers are used to this region.

POSITANO

Leaving Sorrento, Positano will be the first land you will encounter, which already effectively belongs to the Amalfi Coast. The geographical position of this former fishing village is stunning and, despite the development and the great tourist growth, Positano has managed to preserve itself as a picturesque “vertical city”, with a very unique architecture and scenic beauty.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of the most emblematic of the Amalfi Coast and, without a doubt, one of the places to visit in Positano, especially for Catholics and devotees of the Virgin Mary. But the best thing is to walk along its alleyways and stairways without a specific route, going down to the beach and port, from where you have a fabulous view of the city framed by the hillside above.

Acclaimed so many times by different writers and poets or reproduced on canvas by painters of all nationalities, Positano is also a reference in the fields of marine-style fashion and cuisine. Thus, you can count on many boutiques, shops and street stalls, as well as several cozy restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlors where you can try excellent sweets and delicacies.

AMALFI

Amalfi is the largest city along the Amalfi Coast, and apparently the one from which it takes its name. It’s one of the most popular places to stay after Sorrento and a great alternative to the high prices of Positano. Its location, precisely in the middle, can be very advantageous for those staying and can visit the coast in two different parts and directions: one day to the East and another day to the West.

The city is very lively and bustling. It has a large beach with dark sand (be sure to go to the end of the wall to see the city in front of it) and a pedestrianized historic center with alleys and tunnels full of great restaurants, ice cream parlors and small grocery stores. The queen of this charming town is its majestic Cathedral, literally nestled between the buildings in the central square (Piazza Duomo). To not lose!

RAVELLO

Then, because the concentration of buildings and artistic and cultural activities is truly surprising and unexpected for such a small village. Of these, we can highlight the Ravello Festival (an annual festival of music and arts), the amazing classical music concert hall inside a historic church (Santissima Annunziata) and even an auditorium designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. See the Annunziata concert program on the Ravello Concert Society website.

The central square, with a visit to the Cathedral and Villa Rufolo, can be a good starting or finishing point. But then, get lost in the alleys and peek between the buildings, because when you least expect it, you can find a magnificent view. As a reference, in addition to the famous Terrace of Infinity, which is located within the property of the magnificent Villa Cimbrone, take note of the terrace of the Hotel Parsifal and the Principessa di Piemonte garden, which are free to access and where you really must go. But, explore, because there is more! 🙂
