Visiting Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist activities in the Campania region. In fact, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is one of the most visited places in all of Italy and the reasons are there for everyone to see. An ancient city buried by the ash clouds of the Vesuvius volcano, preserved for fifteen centuries by the action of those same murderous ash.

The Basilica was the most sumptuous building in the Forum of Pompeii, and its space was used to conduct business and administer justice. Dating from 130-120 BC, it is one of the oldest examples of this type of construction in the entire Roman world.

Its interior is divided into three naves, with two rows of imposing columns. Apparently, the walls were richly decorated with stucco, simulating large blocks of marble. With some imagination and with your eyes closed, you might be able to imagine the judges of that time sitting in the center of the basilica, while judicial matters were resolved, it is located in the center of the small western side.

At the bottom of the Basilica is the Civil Forum of Pompeii, where we next drive.

Civil Forum

The Civil Forum was the nucleus of Pompeii’s daily life; epicenter of the main public buildings for the city’s administration and justice, business administration and commercial activities, including markets, and also the main places of worship. Forum square has undergone several modifications over time, having been significantly modified between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, when the square was surrounded by porticos and the bottom was paved with tuff slabs. Axis of the Forum of Pompeii became the facade of the Temple of Jupiter, aligned with Mount Vesuvius.

Temple of Jupiter

The Temple of Jupiter dominates the north side of the Pompeii Forum, with the volcano Vesuvius in the background. Around 80 BC it became a true capitol, apparently inspired by the Capitol in Rome, with three cult statues – Jupiter, Juno and Minerva – similar to those in Rome; and placed on a high base to be visible to passers-by in the Forum square.

Currently, as a tourist attraction, the Forum area (including the Basilica and the Temple of Jupiter) is the place where most people gather, largely because of its location at the beginning of the visit (for those entering through Porta Marina). From there, visitors disperse through the streets of the vast archaeological complex.

Behind the Temple of Jupiter are the Roman baths.

Temple of Augusto Fortuna

Like many other places of worship throughout the Roman Empire, the small Temple of Augustus Fortuna was not only dedicated to the celebration of rituals in honor of Emperor Augustus, but also to propaganda in favor of the imperial house by the local elite – in this case, Marcus Tullius , son of Marcus, duumvir of Pompeii, who built the temple at his own expense. It was, let’s say, a way of getting into the emperor’s good graces.

All over Pompeii, dozens of small places were found that served hot food. They were frequented mainly by the lower classes, including artisans and traders whose homes rarely had a kitchen – and who, for this reason, ate in the thermopolium.

Not far away is the House of the Tragic Poet.

House of the Tragic Poet

One of the most famous private houses in Pompeii, the House of the Tragic Poet stands out for the mosaic placed at the entrance that reads “CAVE CANEM” (“beware of the dog”).

It is said that the decoration of the living room included large mythological paintings depicting episodes from the Iliad. Even the mosaic at the entrance is protected by glass.

Note: The original mosaics and paintings from the House of the Tragic Poet are in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

Casa da Fonte Grande

Casa da Fonte Grande houses one of the most spectacular fountains that have stood the test of time. It is installed on the back wall of the small garden, has the shape of a niche and is covered in multicolored glass mosaics with appealing patterns. What draws the most attention, however, is the expression of the marble masks that decorate the sides of the niche. Unmissable!

Faun’s House

Not far away, still in section VI of Pompeii (see map, below), is the House of the Faun – one of the largest private houses in Pompeii. The wealth and social status of the owner are evident: the sidewalk bears a welcome inscription in Latin; the door is majestic and framed by pillars with decorated capitals; and the entrance floor is inlaid with multicolored marble triangles.

In the center of the impluvium (a type of rectangular tank used to collect rainwater) in the main atrium, there is a copy of the famous Faun statue.
