What to visit in Pompeii

Antiquarian

One of the most fascinating artefacts to come out of Pompeii are the plaster casts of death found in the Antiquary. These foundries were created by pouring plaster into molds that were left behind in the solidified ash once the bodies decomposed. The Antiquary also houses many other artifacts found at the site, including some that date back to before the Roman era.

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is the heart of ancient Pompeii city life. It is in this area that the inhabitants of the city gathered for meetings, and where daily markets were organized. From the Forum, visitors can also see the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Temple of Jupiter.

Baths

The static baths are very well maintained baths that have both men’s and women’s pools and stoves to heat water. The facility also includes a changing room, a cold bath, a hot bath, and a hot bath that used to be heated by air ducts. Many gladiators would also train in the gym that is attached to the facility.

Roman Houses

There are many houses in Pompeii to explore. The House of the Vettii was owned by two wealthy brothers, and their spectacular home was frescoed and beautifully landscaped. Close to this house are many others including the House of Faun, the House of Marcus Lucretius, and the House of Silver Weddings, just to name a few.

Old theater

There are two theaters to visit on the Pompeii site. The Teatro Grande, the grand theatre, was built on the sloping ground and could accommodate 5,000 people. This theater was one of the first theaters to be built by the Romans. Next door is the Teatro Piccolo, or small theater. This small theater was built around 75 BC. and was one of the first theaters with a roof. This theater was mainly used for musicals.

Amphitheater

An amphitheater that was built around the 80s BC. it lies at the far end of Pompeii. The huge theater could seat around 12,000 people. It was here that gladiators would compete in battle.
