Imagine when Alexander VII hired Bernini, in the 17th century, for a project that would become one of the artist’s greatest works: the reform of St. Peter’s Square. The work in which Bernini’s art of perfection was revealed, as they once said.

Bernini took a huge, rectangular, unadorned, dirt-floored space and completely remodeled it.

Of the original, only the Obelisk and a fountain remain. Bernini was meticulous and spared no effort to make the square a true monument. Alexander VII wanted a work to be remembered for centuries to come.

He wanted to make an impact on everyone who came to the Vatican. Pilgrims were expected to observe the papal balcony as they entered the square, a direct view of the Pontiff as he distributed his “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world) blessing.

The numbers are impressive: they are 320 meters long and 240 meters wide, a space that houses more than 300,000 people.

Pantheon

We will continue our tour through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Santa Agnes in Agonia in the square of Navona. The stop you cannot miss is the Colosseum (Amphitheatre Flaviano), you will travel along the Imperial Forums to Venice plaza, where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared World War II against France and Great Britain.

Fountain Trevi

Soon after, Via del Corso, we will take you to the Fountain Trevi, by Nicola Salvi. The artist was responsible for building the fountain in the 18th century after winning a competition organized by Pope Clement XII. Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s Barcaccia Fountain, heading to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.
