Discover with us the 5 things to see and do absolutely during a visit to Sorrento.
Piazza Tasso
Crossed by the lively Corso Italia, Piazza Tasso is the main square of Sorrento, the heart of city life, emblem of an internationally renowned tourist reality.
Originally, the square was called Largo del Castello by virtue of the castle built there by Ferdinand of Aragon in the 15th century. With the urban transformation carried out in the 19th century that marked the disappearance of the castle, the ancient 16th-century walls and the ancient Porta del Piano, the square took on its current appearance.
Named after Sorrento’s most illustrious citizen, Torquato Tasso, to whom a monument by the sculptor Gennaro Calì is also dedicated, the square is adorned with the statue of Sant’Antonino Abate, patron saint of the city.
Among the buildings surrounding the square, the Correale house stands out with a beautiful majolica courtyard (southern side), the church of Santa Maria del Carmine with its rich baroque façade and the elegant Grand Hotel Vittoria (northern side), famous for having hosted the great Enrico Caruso in 1921.
In the suite that bears the tenor’s name, with a spectacular view of the sea, Lucio Dalla wrote the song “Caruso” one night. Along the northern side, a terrace overlooks a narrow and spectacular tuff gorge crossed by a small road that leads to Marina Piccola.
Basilica of Sant’Antonino
Sant’Antonino is the “Patron, Lawyer and Father” of Sorrento and the peninsula. The basilica in the square of the same name is dedicated to the Saint who protects the city from calamities and epidemics and to whom numerous miracles are attributed.
Probably built around the year 1000 on the oratory near the tomb of the Saint, in the following centuries the church was the subject of restorations and alterations that contributed to giving it its current baroque appearance.
At the entrance to the basilica, two whale bones recall the most famous miracle performed by Sant’Antonino, namely that of having saved a child who had been swallowed by a whale.
The interior is divided into three naves divided by twelve columns (6 on each side), partly from Roman villas. The ceiling of the central nave is decorated with three canvases by Giambattista Lama (1734): in the center is depicted Sant’Antonino in the act of freeing the daughter of Sicardo, prince of Benevento, from the devil; in the lateral tondi are represented the saints Gaetano Thiene and Andrea Avellino. From the lateral aisles you descend into the Crypt with a vault resting on eight columns of spoils.
At the center of the hypogeum there is the altar on which there is the statue of Sant’Antonino behind which there is the perennial oil lamp. In memory of one of the miracles performed by the Saint, it is devotion for the faithful to cross themselves with the oil with which the silver plate on the back of the statue is anointed.
Under the altar are preserved the remains of the patron saint; on the walls a rich collection of votive offerings, gifts of sailors who escaped shipwrecks, and paintings depicting miraculous rescues.

Duomo
Rebuilt in the 15th century in Romanesque style on an ancient place of worship, the cathedral dedicated to Saints Philip and James has undergone various restoration works that have completely changed its appearance, until the façade was rebuilt in 1924.
The only original element is the lateral marble portal (1479) which shows the coats of arms of Sixtus IV, the House of Aragon and Archbishop De Angelis in the architrave.
The interior, with a Latin cross and three naves, is decorated on the ceilings with baroque paintings by Oronzo and Nicola Malinconio and Giacomo del Po, and preserves works of great value.
In the first chapel, in addition to the baptistery in which Torquato Tasso was baptized, there is a magnificent marble relief of the Redeemer from 1522 framed by twelve fourteenth-century panels.
In the central nave you can admire the archiepiscopal throne and a pulpit embellished with a “Madonna with Child and the two Saint Johns” by Silvestro Buono (1580), both from the sixteenth century; in the presbytery, the wooden choir is a notable example of Sorrento marquetry from the early twentieth century.
Finally, in the Chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento, a valuable wooden Crucifix from the 15th century overlooks the seventeenth-century altar with lateral putti from the workshop of Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. A few meters from the Cathedral, on Corso Italia, stands the red five-story bell tower. The base and the first three floors most likely date back to the 11th century, while the upper part with the ceramic clock was built in the 18th century.
Opening hours: every day from 7:00 to 19:00.
