A little history of Amalfi and the Amalfi Coast

Whoever sees the small and beautiful Amalfi today may not realize that the colorful village taken by tourists was one of the great Italian maritime powers in the Middle Ages, one of the maritime Republics. The city was founded in 339 and the Republic (or Duchy) of Amalfi began in 958, with the election of Duke Manso I.

Amalfi was one of the first relevant republics of the period. Their ships monopolized the Mediterranean trade with the Arabs and were the first to create a colony in Constantinople and in the Middle East, still in the 10th century. It is for all these reasons that Amalfi named the Amalfi Coast. It reached, at the time, 70 thousand inhabitants.

What to do in Amalfi in 1 day

The Cathedral, or rather the Duomo of Amalfi is one of the main attractions of the city, visible as soon as you arrive in the central square, Piazza del Duomo.

The building dates back to the 10th century, with the tower covered in colorful tiles. Entrance to the cathedral is paid, costs €3 and includes a visit to the Church, the beautiful crypts, the Cloister of Paradise – an external area with some archaeological finds from the old city cemetery – and the Basilica of the Crucifix, with some of the relics of the First church built in the city. I thought the tour was worth it.

The best activity in Amalfi, however, is strolling through the narrow streets of the city, some of them labyrinthine tunnels built into the rock, walk between the small white houses set in the rocky cliffs. The main street in the city is Via Lorenzo D’Amalfi. It is also worth taking a walk along Via Piazza dei Dogi. You will find shops selling limoncello, wines and spices typical of the region, as well as handicrafts, restaurants for all budgets and ice cream parlors. Look for hidden fountains and cribs.

For a great view of the city, drive along Via Lungomare dei Cavalieri. The beach is also nearby, but as you’ll see, it’s not exactly pretty. If you want to better enjoy the blue sea of the Amalfi Coast, it might be worth taking a boat trip or renting one for your group.
