An open-air museum. Florence will surprise you with its narrow streets full of charm, with the colors of the sunset on the Arno River and with the wonderful sunset seen from Piazalle Michelangelo.

Florence delivers a complete experience: its ornate churches keep years of art history, its delicious restaurants offer the best of Tuscan cuisine, and its museums are among the best in the world. Some tips:

Piazza del Duomo, the Cathedral of Florence

Piazza del Duomo is home to some of the most important monuments in Florence, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore (better known as the Duomo of Florence), famous for its colorful marble facade and Brunelleschi dome, Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistery of San Giovanni.

With a colorful marble facade that seems to open up between the tight alleys of Florence, the third largest church in the world will take your breath away from the first moment. Go inside to see the detailed fresco on the dome.

Admission to the cathedral is free, but to visit the other monuments (which I highly recommend) you will have to buy individual tickets. I highly recommend the climb to Brunelleschi’s dome (I liked it so much that I made a point of going up on my three visits to Florence) which has the best views of Florence and the visit to the Baptistery, which has a beautiful mosaic dome, the famous bronze doors” Gates of Paradise” by Ghiberti

Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi Gallery (official website) is one of the best museums in Florence (and the world!) and an unmissable stop for anyone who enjoys art or is interested in art history.

The Uffizi has a spectacular collection of Italian art ranging from the early centuries to the Renaissance. This is where two of Sandro Botticelli’s most famous paintings are located (Birth of Venus and Allegory of Spring). To avoid queues, the tip is to buy the ticket with an appointment. So you don’t waste time in the queue, which is usually huge. The advance ticket costs 4 euros more per ticket (I wouldn’t think twice).

Visit details:
Address: Piazzale degli Uffizi, 6
Visiting hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm

Accademia Gallery Museum

It is known for Michelangelo’s David (a sculpture that impressed me both for its size and the delicacy of the work) and for housing the largest number of works by Michelangelo exhibited in a single museum.

The visit is quick, you can see the entire museum in just over an hour, advance tickets are essential during the July holidays, the week between Christmas and New Year and holidays. The queue is huge.

Visit details:
Address: Via Ricasoli, 58/60,
Visiting hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm

It is worth remembering that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, and that in high season it is worth buying an advance ticket.

Oldest bridge

The Ponte Vecchio is the oldest and also the most photogenic in Florence, it is a pedestrian-only bridge with open spans that yield special photos of the Arno River. Bridge is full of jewelers – and formerly there were fruit shops and even butchers, but the bridge smelled so bad and so much dirt was thrown into the river that in 1593 Ferdinand I declared that from then on only jewelers could operate on the bridge. The custom remains and oriental tourists who are jewelry buyers love it.

In the center of the bridge there is a small square with a bust of the jeweler Benvenuto Cellini and open spans overlooking the Arno River and the city of Florence, this is my favorite part of the bridge.

Tip: the best place to photograph the Ponte Vecchio is from the center of Ponte Santa Trinita

Piazzale Michelangelo

Michelangelo square is the best place in Florence to watch the sunset.

The square is at the top of a hill and has incredible views of the city of Florence with the Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo and the Church of Santa Croce in sight. It is so named because the original design included replicas of many of Michelangelo’s sculptures and a small museum dedicated to the artist. The project did not succeed and the square only has a replica of the statue of David, the building that would have been used as a museum became a restaurant.

Today, Piazeta Michelangelo is the most popular place in the city to enjoy the sunset.
