ASSISI

In the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi, the towns, churches and panoramas of an Italy that favors the well-lived life

After a 2 h 27 min (173.3 km) journey, you arrive in Assisi. The gigantic Basilica di Saint Francis of Assisi looms sumptuous and lonely at the top of the city and reminds everyone that, yes, we are small.

On Collina del Paradiso, it is one of the most visited Catholic spots in the world. Assis receives around 5 million visitors a year. Its construction dates back to the mid-13th century. There are two superimposed churches: the Lower and Upper basilicas – the second holds the most important fresco on the history of the father of the Franciscan Order, the Storie di Saint Francis of Assisi, attributed to Giotto.

When accessing the lower Church through the pilgrims’ portico, incredible examples of the creativity of faith are revealed: ceilings, crosses, chapels, frescoes. In the center, on the presbytery vault, is one of Giotto’s most famous allegories, a strong representation of the triad of poverty, obedience and chastity. The paintings of the Cappella di San Nicola, which depict the miracles of the saint.

But, before reaching the upper part of the city, you have to get to know its surroundings. Outside the wall stands one of the cornerstones of Franciscanism, the Church of San Damiano. It was there that young St. Clare ran away from the rich family home to take her vow of poverty, founded the Order of Poor Clares and died, aged 60 – she was canonized two years after her death, in 1255.

Even today, the door to Clare’s room is there, in the oldest part of the façade. The garden, oratory, cloister and refectory can also be visited. The Basilica di St. Clare is just a few minutes away, beyond the walls of the walled city.

Gothic in style, it has a delicate façade, lined with white and pink stones that change tone depending on the light. In a side chapel lies, incredibly well preserved, the body of the saint.

A few minutes away on foot, the Cattedrale di San Rufino recalls the time when young St. Clare lived in that part of the city, the most prestigious at the time, with her family. Beneath the churchyard, there is an impressive concentration of historical and artistic treasures dating back to the times of imperial Rome.

Strolling through the surrounding streets, you will also reach the neighborhood where Francis lived as a boy and the Chiesa Nuova, built in the 17th century on the site where his family’s home would have been.

A few steps away is the pretty Piazza del Comune, which is home to the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, a medieval building that is now home to the International Society of Franciscan Studies, and the 1st-century Temple of Minerva, home to a large Roman site. – its interior, however, now houses a baroque church.

Very close by, among houses from the Middle Ages and Renaissance Palaces, on Via di Saint Francis , is the studio of the painter and sculptor Franco Posperi. On the same street, the 11th-century Palazzo del Monte Frumentario stands out, hosting temporary exhibitions. A portico with seven arches supported by Byzantine columns marks the entrance.

Going straight along Via Saint Francis, number 3 on Via Giotto is a great option for those looking for a meal. Piadina Biologica serves the most typical sandwich in central Italy – everything is organic there.

And look for rustic brutti ma buoni (“ugly but tasty”) biscuits in local markets, made with meringue and hazelnuts, to eat when you hit the road.

SPELLO

Just 12 kilometers separate Assisi from tiny Spello, which rises on the slope of the so-called Saint Francis Mountain, Monte Subasio. With intertwined stone houses that go up the hill, the citadel preserves the wall from when it was a Roman settlement practically intact. Beyond the wall, the Porta Venere, standing since before Christ, is very well preserved.

You can see most of Spello’s attractions in a few hours, and almost all of them are concentrated on Via Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour. It is worth starting the itinerary at the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti. The Cappella Baglioni has a beautiful and colorful fresco depicting the early years of Jesus.

But the best thing to do there is to stroll through the charming streets, enjoy the shades of pink and peach, which change according to the time of day, and find nooks and crannies to enjoy the view.

Ristorante La Cantina is, by far, the most recommended place to try typical Umbrian food. If you manage to beat the queue, go for the lamb with artichokes, but order the antipasti: the local ham is some of the best in Italy. The Osteria de Dadà, at number 47 on the same street, has few seats and homemade food in generous portions.
