TOUR ROME IN A DAY

Rome is a city that not even those who live there can get to know everything, in every corner you breathe history and in every corner there is a monument that represents an important event. But if we don’t have much time available, it is possible, in a whole day or in 6 hours, to visit some monuments in a “superficial” way.

Transfers Rome to Civitavecchia

1. COLISEUM, PIAZZA VENEZIA AND VIA DEL CORSO

We start our tour from the Coliseum, then to PIAZZA VENEZIA, towards VIA DEL CORSO. It is in this grandiose square that the monument to Vittorio Emanuelle is located – an icon of the unification of Italy. Beside the square, start walking along Via del Corso, a long street in the center of Rome where the main stores, commerce and ice cream parlors are located. The road connects the squares: Piazza Venezia to Piazza del Popolo. Walking along Via del Corso and side streets you will visit many of Rome’s sights, shops, squares, churches, museums and restaurants.

2. PANTHEON, PIAZZA NAVONA AND/OR FONTANA DI TREVI

Before heading towards the Trevi Fountain, visit the PANTHEON (or Pantheon) and PIAZZA NAVONA. Two unmissable attractions in Rome also at the end of the day. Then Piazza Popolo, bringing together street artists and many people enjoying the cafes around the square. Very tasty.

On your way to the Pantheon, be sure to visit the beautiful Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Via del Caravita) and Piazza di Pietra.

About Pantheon of Rome

The Pantheon in Rome was built in 126 AD. and is considered one of the best preserved architectural works of ancient Rome. I couldn’t get in because I went in the late afternoon and it was already crowded. The Pantheon’s own website recommends advance reservations if you intend to visit it on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, even though the visit is free. If you wish, you only pay for the audio tour (€8.50) or a guided tour (€25)

About Fontana Di Trevi and Piazza di Pietra
From the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, head towards FONTANA DI TREVI, one of Rome’s most photographed sights. On the way, be sure to admire the PIAZZA DI PIETRA where the Temple of Hadrian is located. Built in 145 AD, its ruins with 11 marble columns are impressive.

Further on is the FONTANA DI TREVI and a large crowd of tourists. Photograph the most famous fountain in the world. For those who want to take great care in the photos, the tip is to visit the fountain at less popular times, such as: very early or late at night. You can also visit shops with two or more floors around the fountain to try to take a picture of the Trevi Fountain from above.

3. VIA DEI CONDOTTI AND PIAZZA DI SPAGNA

Leaving the Trevi Fountain, go through the famous designer street: VIA DEI CONDOTTI. Considered the center of elegant fashion in Rome. Condotti starts at PIAZZA DI SPAGNA, the famous Square of the Stairs. By the way, it is important to remember that you cannot sit on the stairs, unless you want to be fined in euros.

Walk along Via dei Condotti to Plaza de España with a few stops at shop windows, cafes, lunch and the best tiramisu you will ever eat.

4. WHERE TO EAT IN ROME: ANTICO CAFFE GREGO, POMPI AND PASTIFÍCIO GUERRA

Apart from the designer shops, VIA DEI CONDOTTI is home to one of the most famous cafes in Rome, the ANTICO CAFFE GREGO. My tip is to also walk along VIA DELLA CROCE, a beautiful alley with several charming restaurants. It is there that one of the best Roman sweets is located: Tiramisu from POMPI. Plus, another simple gastronomic spot that I fell in love with: PASTIFÍCIO GUERRA. For just €4, lunch or dinner, you can grab a plate of very Italian pasta and eat it on the street.

5. PIAZZA DEL POPOLO

From Piazza di Spagna, follow the walk to another square: the imposing PIAZZA DEL POPOLO (People’s Square). Certainly one of the biggest squares in Rome. In its surroundings there are churches such as the Basilica Santa Maria del Popolo (with works by Caravaggio), the twin churches, the famous Flaminio obelisk, fountains and statues.

Piazza del Popolo joins the main thoroughfares of the historic center of Rome: Via del Babuino, Via di Ripetta and Via del Corso.

6. VILLA BORGHESE PARK AND PINCIO TERRACE

Next to Piazza del Popolo: PARQUE VILLA BORGHESE, heading towards TERRACE DO PINCIO, a point in the park that has a beautiful view of Piazza del Popolo. The climb is steep, but worth the effort. Finally, leave the park through Porta Pinciana which leads straight to Harry’s Bar – a legendary place in Rome that was once the setting for the film La Doce Vida by Fellini (in Via Vittorio Veneto), return to the hotel.
