POSITANO

Positano is located in the Campania region, and forms part of the famous Amalfi Coast. In the past, the region was very rich due to its great maritime vocation. Currently, the city maintains itself as a coveted tourist destination, with good accommodation options and local commerce to serve the thousands of tourists who visit it every year.

In its heyday, Positano played an intense role in international trade. Even facing several invasions, the city prospered and became famous for boasting a strong partnership with the East in the 16th and 17th centuries. During this period, impressive palaces were built and, nowadays, many of them house luxury hotels.

In the 1950s, the city was frequented by the wealthy and rebels of the Italian dolce vita. Film director and producer Franco Zeffirelli maintained, for 35 years, a residence in the city, which became a meeting point for artists. Many famous people passed through there, musicians Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, from the band The Rolling Stones, composed the song Midnight Rambler (1969) during a stay in the Italian commune.

Today, Positano is an almost mandatory destination in Italy, for its beautiful and intricate landscapes and attractive atmosphere. As in virtually all communes on the Amalfi Coast, Positano’s buildings are stacked on steep slopes and its open areas are intensively cultivated with fruits and vegetables that flourish in the fertile volcanic soil.

Door-to-door in 3 h 30 min

The regions closest to the dark, pebbly beaches are for pedestrians only. A landscape complete with cliffs that seem to be trying to plunge into the sea. Beaches managed by some local establishments, which rent tents and chairs. It is closer to the beaches, where the tourist bustle also happens and where there are many restaurants and shops, most of them selling high summer women’s clothing.

If the tourist is looking for something beyond shopping, food and moments of relaxation, Positano has many historical points and many legends, with several interesting churches, especially Santa Maria Assunta. The city is also known for its fame linked to the culture of ballet, attracting distinguished guests to its performances.

Positano mainly consists of hotels and villas scattered around a steep curve above the sea. Consequently, almost every accommodation in the city has a breathtaking view. This kind of geography, however, means that there are many steps to climb. If the tourist does not want or is able to face them, the alternative is to stay in a hotel or inn in neighboring cities.
