Vallone dei Mulini

The Vallone dei Mulini in Sorrento is a place of great naturalistic charm. The formation of this deep crack in the rock dates back to about 35,000 years ago. Valley owes its origin to the most violent eruption in the history of the Campi Flegrei and to the subsequent processes of erosion by the waters that progressively carved into the tuff base.

It is the best preserved valley on the Peninsula (there are four others), even if today, unfortunately, you can only admire the central part that extends from Piazza Tasso to Villa La Rupe and from there to Porta degli Anastasi. Vallone owes its name to the presence of a mill, the ruins of which are visible, used until the early 1900s to grind wheat. In addition to the mill, historical and artistic evidence also tells of the presence inside it of a sawmill and a public washhouse.

The construction of Piazza Tasso (1866) decreed the end of the activities in the valley. The filling of the terminal part of the valley with the consequent isolation of the area from the sea, caused a sudden increase in the humidity rate that made the area unlivable.

Particular microclimate instead favored the development of a luxuriant herbaceous and arboreal vegetation that gives the valley a ghostly area, especially in the evening.

Correale Museum

“The most beautiful provincial museum in Italy”, this is how the Correale Museum has been defined with its interesting collection of minor arts from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Museum is located in what was the eighteenth-century residence (Villa alla Rota) of the Correale family, Counts of Terranova, donated by the brothers Alfredo and Pompeo Correale to the city of Sorrento together with the family collections of pictorial and decorative art to make it a museum open to the public.

Inaugurated in 1924, the Museum is divided into 24 rooms in which Greek, Roman and medieval artefacts, 17th and 18th-century furnishings, porcelain and majolica from Capodimonte and other manufacturers, Venetian glass, Bohemian crystal, a group of 18th-century Neapolitan shepherds, clocks are exhibited.

Of note are the beautiful collection of furniture and objects of local marquetry craftsmanship, the core of Neapolitan and foreign paintings (17th-18th centuries) and those of the landscape painters of the so-called “Posillipo School” (Giacinto Gigante, Anton Plitoo, Teodoro Duclère), some editions of the works of Torquato Tasso. Not to be missed, the beautiful garden surrounding the palace and the terrace-belvedere overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

Opening hours and ticket prices for the Correale Museum
Tuesday to Saturday: 9:30 – 18:30
Sunday and holidays: 9:30 – 13;30
Closed: Monday
Ticket price: Full price €7.

Church of San Francesco

Rome to Sorrento Private Driver

A few meters from the Villa Comunale, stands the convent complex of San Francesco d’Assisi consisting of the church, the cloister and the monastery. In the 14th century, the Franciscan friars built, on the site of the ancient oratory founded by Sant’Antonino, a church later modified in Baroque style.

Completely remodeled at the beginning of the 18th century, it retains the architecture of that era with the exception of the white marble facade dating back to 1926, and the inlaid door from the 16th century.

The interior, with a single nave and rich stucco decorations, houses a 17th-century wooden statue of Saint Francis and, on the main altar, the canvas of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata (1735) by Antonio Gamba, a pupil of Solimena.

Near the church stands the Benedictine monastery founded in the 7th century and ceded to the Conventual friars in the 14th century who still live in part of it today.

Of note is the 14th-century cloister with its arched structure, a harmonious fusion of different styles due to the restorations of the various eras, with picturesque placement of plants and flowers. In addition to its beauty, the cloister is famous for hosting art exhibitions, displays as well as the musical events of the Sorrento Summer.

Opening hours: every day from 7:00 to 19:00.
