Rome to Pompeii Tour

Have you ever thought about visiting the ruins of an authentic ancient Roman city, relatively preserved? Then don’t miss this tour of Pompeii, the city immortalized by a tragedy.

If you are spending a few days in Rome, a great “round trip” option is to visit the ruins of the legendary city of Pompeii.

In Pompeii, where we find the relatively preserved ruins, with plaques informing the names of the main places. In addition, it is possible to walk through the old buildings and even enter some of them.

One thing that is incredible about the history of Pompeii is the sad fact that a great tragedy turned out to be a gift to modern society, as the ash from the volcano buried and “frozen” in time a genuine example of a Roman-style city – which allowed modern archaeologists to see and understand much about the daily life and lifestyle of ancient Rome.

It is very likely that the ruins of Pompeii have told a lot about the customs of that time. And if you doubt it, it must have shown more than even the ruins of the city of Rome.

Rome to Pompeii Tour, including some curiosities. It’s a great opportunity to let you know what to see in Pompeii.

To start, let’s go to a brief account of the key event that sealed the fate of the city.

The Tragedy at Pompeii

The prosperous city of Pompeii was still restoring its buildings – damaged after a major earthquake in the year 62 – when in the early afternoon of August in the year 79 (there are scholars who claim that it was in October), the volcano Vesuvius erupted.

Via Marina, Forum of Pompeii and House of Faunus

As soon as we pass through Porta Marina ( P ), after a small climb, we come across Via Marina, the street that gives access to the great public square of Pompeii – its Forum. Along the way we find 3 ruins of important buildings in the city:

Temple of Venus

The large space with the remains of columns and friezes on the floor that we see today was where the temple of worship of the goddess Venus, one of the patron saints of Pompeii, once stood. According to archaeological evidence, it was in the final stages of reconstruction (due to the 1962 earthquake) when the eruption occurred.

Basilica

In the space immediately after and on the same side of the Temple of Venus, there is one of the oldest buildings in the city (dating from 120 BC): the Basilica. In it, Pompeii’s legal and political activities took place.

Today, we can see most of its walls and the bases of its columns. I found it interesting to note the enormous size of the building, making it possible to imagine its grandeur in the heydays.

Temple of Apollo

On the other side of the Via Marina road, at the height of the Basilica, is one of the most famous buildings in Pompeii: the Temple of Apollo. Archaeological research has revealed that he was one of the city’s principals, as Apollo was another patron saint of Pompeii.

Today, we can see the surrounding walls, the remains of the portico that surrounded it (with the ruins of the friezes and columns), the podium where the temple used to be and the base of the walls, with some columns.

Other highlights are: the bronze replica of the statue of Apollo next to the side portico and a white column next to the temple, where there was a sundial on top.

Via Marina ends at the city’s large public square: the FORUM OF POMPEI.

Rectangular in shape and enormous, the Forum was surrounded by a portico of columns (the remains of which can still be seen) and important buildings in the surroundings and in the center. Are they:

Eumachia Building Portal

It is believed that it was a kind of textile industry in Pompeii, where the production of fabrics in the city was controlled. It was dedicated to the priestess Eumachia, on behalf of the wool merchants’ association.

Today, we see the walls that enclosed the building and the enormous space it occupied. But the real highlight is the portal that leads to the Forum, where we can see carved leaves.

During your visit, be sure to also notice the presence of 2 tribunes on each side of the portal. There were statues of members of the dynasty of Julius Caesar and the Roman Emperor Augustus.

Vespasian’s Temple of Genius

Right next door was a temple that was still incomplete at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius. It is believed that it was probably dedicated to the Emperor Vespasian – or rather, to his “Genius”, as it was not customary to worship the figure of the Emperor in the first person.

There are strands that believe that, in fact, it was dedicated to the “genius” of Augustus.

In addition to the surrounding walls and the temple itself, the highlight we see today is a kind of marble altar located in front of the temple’s podium, decorated with reliefs depicting the sacrifice of a bull – a ceremony that was performed in Ancient Rome, in honor of a living Emperor.
